not so much an emergency but I'm visiting family this Christmas and will be away from home for about a week and a half. With no-one here to feed my fish what can I do in the way of feeding them? will they be okay? thanks

Healthy adult fish can usually go up to a week without foods; put one of those feeding blocks in & leave the filter on, and it'll be fine! ^^; Otherwise, just get a bunch of live foods and stick 'em into the tank.... Most except for brine shrimp will survive quite a while; I think daphnia reproduce or something? Not quite sure; but, yeah. >:D

thanks for the reply, have heard people discourage the use of holiday blocks but any particular thing to look out for with a holiday block? the main thing I'm worried about is my fry tank and my small platies as I don't know how long they will last. thanks

Healthy adult fish can go over two weeks with no food. Check out this article on breeding, particularly the simulation scheme about 2/3 of the way down the page. I've extended the fast to three weeks a couple of times trying to get fish to breed.
