So I'll be leaving for work from July 10th to August 15th and in doing so I'm leaving a 30 gallon tropical and 10 gallon planted in the care of my two roomates. That's roughly 5 weeks. If I do a major water change on both tanks before I leave and then teach one roomate to maybe do 1 water change two and a half weeks later should I be ok.

30 gal has one rosy barb, 1 green tiger barb, 2 blue rams, and 1 bolivian ram

10 gal has cherry barbs, anubis, and java fern.

any suggestions or experience with leaving on extended trips?

I dont think its a case of it can't be done ... I think its a case of whats best for your fish and a weekly change is the recommended rate to keep the water quality high.

I would make the effort to write it down ... people can forget the minor details of anything in 2 weeks.
