I have couple of echinodorus palaefolius var. latifolius in my tank. Lately, some of their leaves have turned yellow and then simply decomposed. However, my other plants are just doing fine. Should I be worried at all? I have a 32 gal tank with total of 40W lighting. I tested the water parameter and they are normal. I also use Plant-Gro to fertilizing the plant. BTW, the plant have been in the tank since January and only the last 2 weeks I started to notice this problem.

How old is your light ?? maybe a bulb change is due ??

You are only getting a little over 1 watt per Gallon so that type of plant requires medium light so it sounds to me that it either is A dying off slowly due to lack of proper lighting or your substrate may not be rich enough to handle it...

From my reading it is a slightl difficult plant to house without have all your setting correct...

I would say change the bulb if it's old or better yet do a slight upgrade and you will see a real difference...

I had the same problem with a plant in my tank ( species unkown ) and within 1 hour of adding the proper lighting the plant started to pearl and is doing visible better now...

have you thought of adding Co2 to your system adding this could help get things going better for you as well..

if you need more info or link to info please feel free to PM me..

Well, I have CO2 added and the amount of CO2 dissolved in the water is optimal. The light is only 3 months old. Also, I have attached aluminum foil inside the hood to reflect more light into the tank. Since I added the echinodorus 3 months ago, they have at least double their size. So I think the light and the CO2 must be ok. What you said about the substrate could be right. Is there anything I can do to improve that? I had already put fertilizer there.

So you don't see any new growth ??

Can you see under the tank to check root growth ??

The plant may just need more light then you have and sadly tinfoil does very little to reflect, try one of the silver blankets and cut it to shape they have a almost mirror finish and you should get better reflection..

try a fertilizer tablet close to the plat to enrich the soil...I have never used any fertilizers so I am just taking a guess..

good luck...keep me posted

Is the leave completely yellow, or are the veins still green. Sounds like it could be a nitrogen deficiency, what is you nitrate level? It could also be an iron deficiency. You might consider adding some Flourish.
