now i've been thinking about putting other fish with my betta i know that it depends on how aggressive they are but i don't know if i should leave my betta in there or just make a normal community tank with some tetras or something else because i want my betta to be in the bigger tank which is 10 gal ( i'm trying to get a bigger one though but not for another while) and i was thinking to add like 3 other fish and a pleco but he might get to agressive and have to be put in a 1 gallon bowl which is only other tank i have...

so over all i'm asking if i should take him out or leave him in?

really need some help

Well first off I would not get a pleco unless you can buy at least a 55gallon tank. Certain Pleco's can get anywhere from 8" to 24". So be sure to check out the Pleco section of these forums.

Betta's are very solitary animals. They don't mind living alone. I would not suggest putting other fish in with them just for the fact that if the betta is unhappy he gets removed from his original enviroment.

Would he get moved if the other fish did not get along with him?

I wouldnt put a betta with tetras or a plec, and def no plec in a 10 gallon. If you do want a ten with him in, try ottos or cories.

yeah he would have to be moved i guess

I personally wouldn't remove him from his tank. Becuase you may have to put him in a smaller container and then he wouldn't be used to it. He probably loves the space he has now. So yeah if you want to add something add cory cats to your betta.

If you want a community tank I would start an new tank, if your able to. I wouldn't add fish to your now betta tank.

more plants for him to play... and ghost shrimp

I have an unpopularist opinion of Bettas CAN play well with others. Yeah, Id go for more passive fish, but Bettas can hold their own quite well, but since its a smaller tank you might get away with cories, a Dwarf Gourami could be good, I have sparkling gourami in with mine, small clean fish, very non aggression. Personally I dont think Tetras are the evils of the tank at all, In all the years I've kept fish, going on 6 years now, I've not had problems with tetras and Bettas. Never.

However in saying that some Bettas are not equipt to deal with others, its a personality thing, NOT a species specific thing. I used to keep lots of Bettas, and only two of which lived out their existances in temples of isolation. The others did quite nicely in communities.

I moved an aggressive girl and put her in with 2 rescued mollies..stood watching her ..she was in there 5 minutes and was terrorising the smaller of the mollies...so she is out again!

i guess i'll put in cory cats and/or ghost shrimp but how many more should i put in ?

Just my observation from one betta, so nothing to draw conclusions from.
My crown tail is in a 10g and shares it with 4 danios and two albino cories. Every now and then he gets annoyed by the danios sneaking up on him to steal his food. He does not look unhappy and not agressive either, he's like my tetras in their community tank, territorial and not agressive and not fin nipping.

Whether this stays this way or not, I can't tell, I am prepared to rehome the danios, the cories appear to be no problem whatsoever, with them staying in the lower section of the tank anyway.
