today my family noticed our tank was leaking water onto the floor, and for the benefit of the new carpet the tank has been moved and drained

all of the fish along with as much tank water as was left and the filter media have been moved into a spare tank we have, which fits them fine but was empty up until now.

my first concern is that the old filter media only just fit into the new filter, and was squashed into the spaces. i doubt a lot of water will pass through them and i might have lost all the bacteria, would this be the case?

next, i was wondering the best way to get the old filter media out and replace it with the sponges that actually fit into the filter properly. theyre sitting in the water for now.

ill be watching the ammonia levels like a hawk, but is there anything else i should look out for?

as for the old tank we'll look at getting the silicon redone soon

thx in advance

Why didnt you just use the mature filter in the spare tank? If its only a temp measure it will be fine.

The mayure filter sponges will not have lost any of their beneficial bacteria in such a short space of time....

its inbuilt into the old tank, couldnt remove it.

Just cut the sponges up till they fit, then squeeze the rest of the sponges that won't fit in over the filter sponges, to get as much bacteria into the sponges as possible.
