ok, i've been running my fluval 305 for almost a year now, with no problems... until today. I opened up the filter to clean the sponge, etc. as per usual maintenance and now it won't seal. I've googled the issue, but taking it apart again and checking the rubber seal has just made matters worse! it is leaking from all around the top, where the 2 peices connect. it is also too easy to open now, where i had to almost break my fingers getting it open previously.

I'm going to go get a replacement filter asap, but maybe there's something i can do to save this one? Please help!!!

Have you tried checking all of the seals for dirt or debris. If they are clear, try applying some vaseline to them and put them back in.

I did that... It was quite gunked up actually (i hadn't thought to clean it regularly) but it leaked more afterwards. :( the locking mechanism on the intake/outtake tubes isn't wanting to close properly either.

the filter is just sitting right now, mostly filled with water so the media doesn't dry out. i'll be heading in town in about 20 mins to go get another filter of some sort... i don't know what's available here, as i'm still new to the area. i may just buy a cheap hob until i can get a nice filter. Depends on what's here, really.

So the aquastop valve is not closing. Hmm I have just had a look at mine and the only thing that I can think of is that the two seals on the valve are not in place properly. Did you clean these two as well as the main one?

i did. I made sure everything was in place properly before i reassembled, but nothing helps. :(

If it is just this valve that is faulty, then you can get these from most fish shops (in the UK anyway). If you are going to get a new filter, then I would get a 405 or the equivalent as I would say that a 305 on a 55g is under filtered.

Well, ive been to the fish store... they didn't have any fluvals in, but had rena filstars instead. I bought the x2 version (supposedly good for 75g) as they didn't have the next size in. I may upgrade to the x3 next year when i have a bit more cash to play with... this was just a emergency purchase.

If anyone could give me their opinion on this new filter, that'd be great! The only thing i'm not liking about it so far is that it's smaller than the fluval and as such, i had to remove some of the media. :( Sadly, i can't find my receipt for the filter, so i'm not sure if i can get the warranty coverage. :(
