I went to the lfs looking for pearls, but could only find lavenders. I know that they are a result of breeding a blue and a pearl together. I can't find any pictures online and was wondering if anyone had any pics? Mine *look* just like pearls, so I'm wondering if they were just mislabeled.

Chances are it's a pearl gourami, although it's possible for the two species to breed i have never seen mix of the two different species for sale. Do you have a picture of it?

hehehe, my picture taking skills are quite questionable. I will give it a shot tonight. When the fish turns, you do see a bluish/lavender sheen, but I have no idea what is normal for a pearl. :D

That's interesting - I would *love* to see a pic! Usualy, crossing to similar species will result in offspring that look like either one or the other with very slight differences. I have never seen a lavender. Some pearls have bluish iridescent 'pearls' (the whiteish spots) but these are mostly difficult to see. If yours have an obvious blue sheen, it probably is a hybrid.

Warning...I haven't discovered how to take a good fishy pic yet. Here's my blurry view of the lavenders. ;o)

Like I said, when the light catches them, you do see a bluish sheen along their bodies. Otherwise, they look just like pearls, to my eyes. They are in my qt tank right now, so hopefully in a couple weeks, when I can put them in the 25g, I'll be able to snap a better shot.

From looking at that picture they look exactly like pearls to me :)

Good the blue sheen be due to a reflection of anything? the spectrum of light possibly? Maybe when you get them in the community the other pictures will help

They look like ordinary pearls but a closer picture with more lighting might help show any blue-ish sheen they might have. If they were labelled as lavenders I see no reason they wouldn't be... I doubt people would preffer the name 'lavenders' over 'pearls' so I don't see what the LFS would have to gain by using that name unless it was by mistake.

I'll keep trying with the pics, but I haven't discovered the knack for it yet. ;o) I do get the bluish sheen, but unless it's a reflection from the light, as mentioned. I don't have anything blue in that room, so that's not it. hehehe. I'll take more pics when they're done with the qt and in the main tank. They're very skittish right now. If I turn the tank light on, they really start spazzing out, so I keep it off. Don't want to stress them out too much with a flash bulb either.

I would love to find a LFS that did not mislabel -any- fish  It's just a sales technique really, call the fish something else and people will get curious and buy it thinking it's extremly rare, or uncommon. Most of the time the fish is something common, like a pearl in think case. It's like calling neons cardinals, they look quite similar when they're small, and cost buyers a couple of dollars...

Often you'll see that they're mislabeled because they don't know any better...

Here is a lavander gourami

That's definatly NOT what you have :p I agree with everyone else that they are probably pearls, but they could also be young snakeskins.

oh wow! He is gorgeous!...and definitely nothing like mine. I'm really thinking they are mislabeled pearls. There is no snakeskin pattern on them, just the pearlescent (and soooo very shy!). Each and every one in the tank was a female except for 1 male, and he had the orangy male coloring.

Thanks for the pic! I really appreciate it and made my day seeing him.

Wow! Weird fish... I can assure you that they aren't snakeskins so they must be ordinary pearls :)
