I have seen some nice Malawis, but I can`t remember their names. do these ring a bell to anyone?: something Ahli and something Brownei or Braunei. Should have wrote them down!! thanks in advance,
Ahli - could be Sciaenochromis ahli also known as Haplochromis big eye
or Sciaenochromis fryeri also known as Haplochromis Ahli also known as Electric Blue
Brownei/Brauni - nope cant think of that one at the mo
Hap fryeri is probably what you are thinking of, they are often mistakenly (or fraudulantly) sold as ahli since they're very similar. Ahli is a rare fish, and cudos if you can find it.
You may be right, the ones in the shop have some yellow on the tail. Still a very nice fish though, I`ll find out for definite at the weekend and let you know.
Its Haplochromis Brownae !! are these Malawis? the other one was also a Haplochromis but Ahli as you said. Not sure if its definitely Ahli though, as you point out it may be Fryeri. Could the untrained eye tell?
I would immediately assume it's fryeri, it almost always is.
Brownae is from lake Victoria, but they tend to get along fine with similar Malawi specimens.
Anything non mbuna pretty much used to be calle a Haplochromis, and as a genus, they still follow that name even though they have seperate genus' I don't know if this means teh malawi haps are a subspecies, or its just a common name
