I am nowhere near an expert on plants, I us low level lighting and no CO2 with liquid ferts. All I really want an opinion on (although plant keeping advice is appreciated) is whether or not my scape looks good (to you) or just a jumbled mess of plants. Also some ideas for changing it up a bit would be nice if you think it could benefit! I'm slowly moving off some of the stock and heading more towards a planted setup as opposed to a community with plants :p

i would get smaller gravel but it depends on what you like. i think it looks good, not overcrowded.

some people prefer plants dotted around, iwagumi, i like dutch style so it depends on your taste, suite your needs not ours as you may hate it, if you want help it may better saying what style you want then we could give better advice.

The tank looks good and the photo quality is awesome.

1 major eyesore though------Remove root background and leave it clear glass or use a black background. It will make the tank look heaps better. At the moment the background takes your eyes away from the plants and fish. With a black or clear background you will suddenly notice the plants look (to the human eye) much more prominent and much more beautiful.

 you have noooo idea how many times I have heard that, I was planning on getting a nice latex b/g but I don't have the spare cash right now. I may just get a plain black background!

Thanks for the comments!

For now I would just remove it and leave the plain glass at the back. It will be a definate and visible improvement and you will notice a huge difference as it will make your tank look brighter, larger and the plants will stand out.

Then later you can just get a plain black or dark blue etc.

i would disagree with this, i think it looks awful to see a tank with no background on it as there is no stop point and i find my eye focusing on points behind the tank.

for a temporary plain black background you could just use a black bin liner and tape it to the back, it will look fine through the glass if a little scruffy outside maybe, but it works well for the short term until you can sort out something more permenant

I am heading out shopping tomorrow with another fish friend so we'll probably have a chance to check out a few aquariums. New b/g might be in line!

If your looking into new backgrounds white black and very pale grey work really well, If your local shop sells them get them if not you can just paint the wall behind the tank.
The only improvements I can see for this tank are to swap the gravel for something more plant friendly and to add more plants.

Low and behold, black b/g!! The picture quality isn't as good though, couldn't find my good camera OR my tripod.

Do you agree with us now? Those plants all of a sudden look brighter and much more lush. also you are not distracted from them at all. Are you happy with it?
