Ok I have the sand and a lovely empty tank staring at me. My question is do I put the sand in first (after being washed) or do I put some water in first and then the sand? :S

If you're planting the tank, have you considered putting anything in with the sand to help them grpw?

A lot of people use laterite / sand mix.

When I changed over, the sand was still wet from being washed. I let it dry for a while, but it was still a little wet. I put a little bit of tank water in before I started putting the sand in. I found the sand easier to work with when it was under water. Once all the sand was in and settled, I then began adding the tank water from the holding tank to a certain point and then topped it off with fresh declorinated water.

Good Luck

This is the way i did my 180 vision.

I put sand in the bottom, put my slate ornaments in, filled half way with water, put my plants in, and filled rest up with water, hey presto....done ;)

I have 8 live plants in my tank that are thriving, and growing rapidly lol, and i have never put anything extra in for them, they just live of whats in the tank :D

I just used play sand and filled it the same way claire did. I got some fertiliser sticks thet you poke in the sand under the plants and they all seem to be doing well.

Well in the end I bought 2 bags of play sand from Homebase. I only ended up using 3/4 of a bag.

I rinsed the sand in a bucket of water throughly and then filled the tank 1/4 full and then put the sand in. After that I filled it right to the top and then put the Ornaments in. I will wait until the tank is upto temp before attempting to put the plants in.

To my surprise after switching everything on there is not much cloud in the water and looks very good. B)

Thanks for the tips everyone.

if you put the sand before filling it, you will have much less dust as the sand will already be settled on the bottom. just be careful not to stir it too much.

You could always put a few inches of water before to make it easier to layout the sand and decorations though
