hubby and I have been talking about getting a larger tank, 50gal (we currently have a 10gal). Is it really hard going from a 10 to a 50? is there an easy way of getting it started (cycled) with using parts of my 10gal tank?
I was also considering getting a couple female platys to breed to stock the tank. The 10gal would be the "baby" tank. how easy is it to do this?

Dont worry, i have just gone from 50L to 350L.

Have just gone through first week of cycling.

Used a third of sponge from internal filter on existing tank and placed it inside of new cannister filter to help seed bacteria.
Also used some gravel from the existing tank and just dropped it in tank as it is similar to the new gravel. You can hang gravel in a net or stocking as well if you dont want to put it in. Thirdly, i added water from the existing tank as well.

I am told that it is generally harder to maintain good water parameters in a smaller tank so if you have been doing okay with your 10g then you will be fine.
Plus there are loads of good experienced people here to help us and lots of cycling logs and info.

The resource center link below is good place to start

Agree with barry :good:

Thanks for the advice. We are thinking about it for a Christmas Present, but not sure if I can handle it just yet. Also, how do I find a good fish dealer around where I live? All we seem to have is Petco and Petsmart :/ would like to go to a smaller non chain dealer

Sorry i cant help you there i'm in the UK but i'm sure one of the members from your side of the pond will be able to help.

LOL Thanks, Ive been "googling" tropical fish dealers for my area but havent really found anything. I have also searched craigslist and found free fish due to overpopulation/over breeding but nothing really about fish shops.

Look for a local club, they're full of breeders; http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/292232-local-aquarium-society-directory/

They'll also know about the best shops in the area.
