ie.
red finned shark
red tailed black shark
ruby shark
red-finned shark, ruby shark and rainbow shark are all common names for the same fish as far as I know.
nope there all different.

red tails are black with a red tail.
red finned are a dark grey with reddish fins
ruby sharks are dark grey with more orangy type fins.

not sure on rainbows haven't seen them.

I'm not having neon tetras, i just bought 6 and 5 of them died, I'm not particularly keen on them anyway.

I'ved hacketfish in my book but I was put off by there picture although it doesn't seem a too good one, any links to some pictures of them? would a number of them be ok together?
I never said red-tailed shark and red-finned shark are the same. The red-tail has (obviously) a red tail, while the red-finned one has all of it's fins coloured red. Rainbow shark is another name for it.
And I'm pretty sure ruby shark is another name for red-finned and rainbow shark too. A healthy rainbow/ruby/red-finned shark should be very dark, almost black, but they are a light to dark grey as juveniles  I have had one in my 21 gal for years, he's happy but he does need a place to hide and will defend it ferociously ;) I'd go with the hatchetfish idea to go with the crayfish, they are quite cool and they're less likely to become lunch than any bottom dwellers :p

EDIT: Phew, too many quotations :S

Hatchetfish and giant danios might work, since they are both top dwellers and are too fast/big to be caught and eaten.

yer, i think i'll look into them, the picture in the book had been cropped strangely!!

It all depends on what size tank I will get as my center piece, if i get a 5ft oer a 4ft I would happily leave the cray fish as a species tank!! maybe put live bearer fry in there.
