Well was watching my lil guy today when i spotted a bubblenest, hidden away between a floating amazon sword, i am so proud of my lil guy, the filter is quite powerful too, but its staying together, so heres my lil guys 1st nest :D

Congrats on your bubblenest.........I still get excited when our boys build :good:

Stupid Question - I'm getting a Betta this saturday, (locally bred and apparently beautiful, can't wait! (and it's my first one)) What is a "bubble nest" ? And what are they made from?

This is a bubblenest that one of our males made while spawning. They make them by blowing air bubbles into the surface of the water. The male will then collect the eggs that the female releases and place them in the nest.

wow, thats pretty amazing. So i'm guessing no females around = no nest?

I've got my tank setup pretty much, just need to come up with some sort of filter-blocker to stop a mild current, also have a fake plastic planty + rock in there at the moment, but i'm going to pull the plastic off and put a real one I think.

I'm also 90% about getting a male, as I think this will be an easier option (just one) and I think that they are perhaps bigger in personality?

My LFS is getting locally bred ones this friday, going to pop in and get my little fella saturday morning, I can't wait!.

Hi
Males dont need a female around to build nests :good: They sometimes do it for no reason. Could be a sign they are happy :good:

My little Moey made a bubble nest the day before the girls arrived......maybe he knew? lol

I accidently ruined some of it when I put his coconut cave in, but now he has filled in some of the gaps and has made it bigger then ever! lol

Thats sweet. I love it when I open up the lid and see a new bubblenest.

sometimes they get a little crazy with their "allowable building space" :p

This guy always rebuilds a huge nest after a water change  .... no reason except he sees the other guy thru the divider.
