I have got two upside down catfish whci i have had for a few weeks. One is fine but the other has now got a large belly It looks like its going to exploed! Help!

May sounds stupid, but it may have trapped winid. Goldfish can get this when they have alot of flake food. Try feeding it some live food. This is more common in goldfish however ... not seen it in catfish before

Then again it could be dropsy ... which is far more serious ... it can cause kidney failiure. If the fish's kidneys become too damaged, they will not be able to pump enough water to keep the fish from becoming bloated.

Are there any other signs? is it swimming okay? has it got any marks on it?

p.s. I could be TOTALLY wrong!

is it eating? does it act like it is in distress? what are your water parameters. and how big is the belly? it is possible you have a female who is heavy with eggs.

Hey, i have 4 of these special fishes myself. But i have never had them bloat before. Do you have any pictures? Are water parameters ok?

Mine used to do that occasionally. I put it down to too much food* as they'd suck up food at the surface then go down to the bottom and do the same there. Right little piggies. I also thought it could be trapped air sucked in while feeding at the surface.

I still have one, the other died after I'd had him for about 12 years or thereabouts, so I guess it's not too serious (if that's what your problem is of course!).

*Too much food in the sense that they were temporarily bloated rather than overweight.

The fish may also be constipated. If this is a possibility you could try some vegetable matter like boiled peas with the shells taken off or boiled cucumber or ever algae wafers. How long has the fish been bloated and did it happen quickly or over time? keep us posted

All the water parimeters suit the fish and all the other fish (including the other upsidedown catfish) are fine. He hasn't been eating and has been hiding under my fulval 2! Help!

His large belly apears suddenly, when I looked the next day it had gone down. Now it's come back again!
