Does anyone know of any LFS in NYC that sells kuhli loaches? Perferablely in Manhatten.

Hi dizzied :)

Kuhli loaches are one of those fish that come and go. Sometimes it's a matter of finding them at the right time of year. I live on Long Island and don't recall seeing any around here lately. :/

That's too bad. I can never seem to find them, even though they've always seem like a "common" species to me. I'll just keep an eye out for it.

Well I saw some at the petland near my house. But I advise not to buy any fish from there. They are full of deasies and they are in terrible condition. I blame the staff which knows how to take care of them. In matter of fact they dont know how to take care of any of the fish they sell.

I hear ya. Petland has the most unhealthy fish I've ever seen. I usually go there for equipment/supplies because they have very low prices, but I can't stand to see the fishes. Some are just suffering, barely alive on their sides on the gravel.

Petland Discounts stores always seem to have their ups and downs. This is partly because they move their good managers to better stores. By the time the managers get a store running well, they are transfered somewhere else. Then things go downhill for a while.

I mostly buy their tanks because they are the cheapest around, but their prices for filters, etc. are not as good as the independent lfs I go to. They do also carry live blackworms and tubifex worms, which many other stores do not, but since they need to be cleaned daily, if the management is lax, the employees don't do it and the quality of them is not as good as it can be.

The turnover of all their employees is high and they seldom know anything more about fish than they pick up from their customers and the lines they are given by management to sell things. I was in one last week with a friend who bought a betta. The employee actually blew into the bag to fill it with air. :S

My main complaint is that so many of the fish they sell are not appropriate for small tanks or beginning fishkeepers. While the store managers have some choice in the fish they order from the list given to them by the company, they MUST buy certain dyed fish, which IMHO is a bad practice. :/

I'm in Va. and Kuhli loaches here are iffy too. The LFS will have a few one week and not have them again for a month or so. Maybe you could ask if your LFS will get any in?

Petland does have some fishes I haven't seen elsewhere though, like glass catfish and archerfish.

I'm going around downtown to midtown Manhatten today, maybe I'll find the kuhli.

Good luck and hope you find them. I'm waiting for my LFS to get some more black Kuhli's, They said maybe either this fall or early winter.
