Down a dark hole... Down a dark hole... with an ow
Hi there,

I really want to get some Kribs, but i dont know what we talk about "kribs" to be?
I have heard and seen many different fish called Kribs/Kribensis.

The ones i want are very colourful and nice chiclids - Pelvicachromis pulcher

I have a book that says they are Brackish... yet have heard nothing to back this up?

I am trying to do the essential research before I buy them, but i dont know what fish we are talking about?

Any clarification, useful/neccessary info on Kribs + compatibility with my tank/tank mates (bearing in mind my Gouramis will be in the main tank).....

Link to what i think are Kribs -

Kribs link
Is this good info?

Thank ppl

Pelvicachromis pulcher are kribs. I do not keep any of mine in brackish and I don't know anyone that does. My albinos bred, so they must be happy. :)

They are lovely fish  the llink seems ok but of course you should look at more sites. I keep my kribs in pairs, although the albino Dad is still with his babies in the 78l and the mum was moved to the 320l when they were first hatched.

They are compatible with most fish but you have to be wary that if you are trying to breed them, they get quite aggressive with tankmates so they'll need to be able to take care of themselves. Cories are often not good with breeding kribs because the kribs and fry hang around down the bottom and the cories would be inflicting on their space.

With a tank your size (the 35gallon, right?) you'd be ok with that though as long as there's room for everyone.

I'll stop rambling now

No no, ramble on.... its good info!

If you take a look at my sig and follow the link to my site, you can see the rough layout of the tank....

There would be all the fish in my sig - 3 gouramis 1 Pictus and a Plec in the 35UKGal with the kribs, would they be ok do you think....

The reason i sound so cautious is a) because i believe it pays to be cautious, B) because i have just been through a right old ordeal in having to return my Syno Angelicus, gutted, he was seriously damaging the plec.....

My G/F really loves kribs, or the look of them at least.
Would you recommend getting a pair, or just 2 females. I dont mind them breeding as long as they dont become incompatible with my tank mates......?

I will be looking at gettin 2 more pictus also, would this overcrowd the tank -

3 Gouramis
3 Pictus
1 Plec
2 Kribs

Would that be over-stocked in your opinion?

Now il stop waffling ;)

:D

What? lol

OK, you could have 2 males in your tank as IME it's the females that get shirty with other kribs of the same sex. However, if there were no males in the tank they could well be grand. Otherwise you could get a pair and simply don't provide them with somewhere to spawn. They are cave spawners and need caves with small entrances. This is what I did with the ones I have in my 160l.

I see that your tank is high rather than long. Is it wide? The reason I ask is because if you did want them to breed (remembering the are middle/bottom dwellers), you may have problems.

I don't think you would be overstocked but with what looks like a high tank, you want to be careful to not overcrowd the bottom.

My best option, if I were you, would be to buy a male and a female. Make sure the male is a fair bit bigger than her (if not she might attack him) and have a bonded pair but not breeding. I am not sure whether it's possible to stop them breeding by not giving them anywhere to do it or whether they'll find a way yet.

HTH

Thats great cheers CS :)

The tank is 30" x 18" x 18" , so yes, it is wide also. its not all that tall though.... id say wider than tall.
Personally i would buy all tanks 18" tall, as its a good height - not too tall to be tall :fun: but just the right height - IMO

So with another 2 pictus and a pair of Kribs - you dont think i will be over stocked?
Thats good, as thats all i plan to get.

Hmm, i have a fair few caves they "could" spawn, its not that i dont want them to spawn, i just dont want em to attack my Gouramis (or anything else for that matter....

I suppose if that did occur i could put them in my 8.5UKGal QT Tank??? is that veasible?

Thanks for your help, i gues what your saying is yes! get them + 2 pictus (not at the same time) and get a bonded pair !!!

You got any ???? :p

Thanks again

Well, you don't need to buy a bonded pair. What I was saying that if you get a male and a female, they may well bond and want to breed but perhaps not be able to because of there being nowhere to do it.

A 40l would not be a good enough size, they can often be aggressive with each other if they are not given enough room. I had to move my female from the 78l because the male was going for her. Dither fish are good and gouramis as top dwellers could be a good option. My non-breeding pair are grand in my 160l and it's pretty overstocked actually.
