We have allowed a "situation" to develop through time constraints - our kribs managed to raise a daughter and we have left her in the tank till she is as big as her mother. We think we know which is which as one looks "younger" - less thick set and somehow more "smooth" however this one seems to have taken up with the male - the other which we thought was the mother has been chased off into the weeds and "daughter" seems to have moved into the family cave.

I thought these fish mated for life but can the male take up with his daughter? Or have we just got confused?

We're going to try to compare Rosy to her picture from a year ago to see if we can identify which one is the mother and which the daughter however I thought I'd ask this question as well.

Many thanks

Miles

I have Kribs and from what I have read when the dominant female is ready to spawn again she will chase off any other females, I have also read the mother will chase away her off spring when she is ready to spawn again, but I am like you I'm 100% sure of this and I too would like to know for sure.

As for mating for life I think this could also change because what when you buy a female from a shop then put her in a tank with a male you already have and they pair up or visa-versa, so again another question I'm not sure about.

Good post by the way, I'll follow this one with you, I think it is in the wrong Cichlid section I thought Kribs were Old World.

I don't believe Cichlid pair for life in my 15 years+ of experience with breeding over 30 diff types of Cichlids, My Gold Severum recently laid eggs with his female that he is paired with, then did the same with another female in the tank, my female Convict has bred with pretty much everything in her tank...texas, jd, other convicts, sajica, a flowerhorn in her old tank etc.

I have also bred around 20 diff types just by sticking a male and a female of the same species together.
