Hi all,

Recently the gf bought 2 kribensis for her aquarium.

30gal:
3 gold barbs
10 neon tetra
1 blue gouramis
2 angle fish

I was over there today and noticed both male and female doing their mating calls, of violently shaking near one another, in one of the fake wooden logs. The tank is currently using small rocks for the substrate. Is it even possible that the kribs will breed in this tank? I hear they really like sand substrate and more of a cave as opposed to a tube. If they do breed is the rest of my gf's tank in danger? The male has recently started to chase the barbs and the tetras whenever they come close to this log. Should I rehome these asap, or should I wait to see if they even breed and cause a problem?

Thanks.

They will breed. They dont mind a pea gravel substrate - but they do like to dig so if you have largish rocks for a substrate they wont be appreciated. They will lay their eggs in any nook or cranny and mine have even ignored the coconut cave and flower pots I put in for them and dug out a pit under a lump of slate before!

The tank is too small for a breeding pair and the rest of your fish are going to suffer if the female krib lays as they get very aggressive - which is ok if you have a large tank the other fish can get out of the way!

I would have thought it will be extra bad if you have gouramis as they are also territorial and I remember in the past when my rams laid eggs there was bedlam in the tank between them and my gourami who would not back down or be chased away!

Thanks for the help.

Ya the substrate is fairly heavy rocks. I do believe there is enough spots in the tank currently that they will find one happy enough to breed. I was surprised when I first heard that gouramis were territorial since the one in my gf's tank really doesn't show it. He may make a quick chase of the anglefish now and again but even that is pretty few and far between. I defintely believe I am going to have to rehome these asap or she will start having problems.

There is a 10gal tank available... Is this big enough to home a breeding pair of kribs?

Thanks.

For a single pair the minimum tank size should be no less than 24 inches in length, and a water volume of 20 gallons is the smallest that they should be kept in.

Honestly, if you have a seperate tank for the fry, a 10g would work. I have seen it done, and I know of members on here who do it as well. A breeding pair of kribs is an aggressive pair of kribs. Make sure fish that can be harmed ( neon tetra's and the gourami ) are not in their way.

Thanks Kribensis. So do you suggest just removing the fry and putting them in the tank without the parents? I was under the impression they should be kept with the parents whenever possible. I'm worried about the others in the tank as well because I'm sure there will be aggression issues before and after the fry are born.

Thanks again for the help everyone.

It is best to keep them with their parent's until they breed again. But, a 10g wont work. They fry won't grow at the appropiate pace.
