there is a krib here at work who i have just noticed has both eyes looking as though she has cataracts in both eyes. she was fine yesterday. i didnt notice anything out of the ordinary in that tank at all. this morning i came in and had a look and both her eyes are bulging and they are both milky white in colour. the shop water stats are ammonia 0, nitrites 0 and nitrates 5. pH is steady at 7.2. tanks have been established and running for 12 months now. tank mates are: 4 bolivian rams, 4 blue rams, 5 other kribs and 4 blue panchax. tank size in litres is 125L. the only decorations in the tank are an anubias on wood and a dwarf rush plant. the filter out take stems are plastic with nothing that a fish could hurt themselves on.

everyone else is fine and im wondering if she has damaged herself or if she has the most rapid onset of cataracts in history :p

any idea what has caused this and how i should treat it?? i cant get any pics sorry as im at work and this is one of the few days i dont have my camera with me. usually it lives in my laptop bag which is attached to my shoulder with some sort of long lasting adhesive :)

anyway thanks in advance guys

sounds like pop eye, which is usually caused by bad water conditions, but yours are fine. I think it can be caused my internal bacteria infections too, but dont quote me on that. So if it is internal bacteria there are plenty meds for it. best to wait though to see what other people reckon.

cheers chish

Its not pop eye, Pop Eye is caused by fluids building up in the fish causing the eyes to pop out, what the krib has is Cloudy Eye which is an external bacterial infection- it is sometimes experienced by fish at the same time as pop eye (like how pop eye and dropsy can be experienced at the same time by fish), but it is a separate condition and more than often it appears just on its own. Use Pimafix to treat the infection, along with lots of small regular water changes with a little StressCoat dechlorinator added in is a good way to treat Cloudy Eye.

fishlette How often are water changes done on the tank and how much water is taken out on average?

There you go, see told you it would be better to wait

the tank is on the main sump system which means in each display tank the water is filter 15 times per hour. the water also runs through 3 UV sterilisers before getting back to the tanks. if we need to do gravel changes etc usually the tank is isolated, cleaned and then turned back on to the main system. most of the time gravel changes are done weekly and this is the only time its emptied but even then it is replaced with water from the system.

im thinking that possibly it is not something from the store. the kribs have only been with us for about 5 days. one died the first day they came and now this one is showing signs of sickness. im guessing its a dodgy wholesaler. we are dealing with a different place than we used to and im not too happy with the quality of fish. some of them are good and others go straight into the hospital tank to be treated for one thing or another. i changed to these guys because the last place we were getting them from was bad too. many dead fish in bags when they came from that place.

when i get in this morning i will isolate and treat the tank. will try and get pics too if i can. tis hard in the tanks at work to get good pics but we will see how we go :)

p.s. i looked at those pics and to be honest it looks like a mix of both of them. one eye is larger than the other and the larger eye is very white

lmao

ok, so i started treating the tank on friday and left them in the owners kind of capable hands over the weekend. today another has a milky eye. i isolated and treated the whole tank as i figured if its bacterial it could affect the others as well. everyone else is still normal except this other krib now. both affected kribs have turned completely black. even the yellow bits on their dorsal fin have gone black. i know they do go dark sometimes but i have never seen them totally black. the one that got sick first is kinda just hangin out on the bottom but no clamped fins or breathing issues but doesnt eat. the other one is still normal but so was the first one the other day. aside from them ingesting a pot of black ink, what else would make a krib turn entirely black. looks kinda eerie with the whhite eyes and the black skin.

i meant to bring my digital in to work today but forgot. i have the day off tomorrow but am coming into the shop for a bit so i will get some pics then.

thanks in advance guys

I tihnk it is the ifs water, i would isolate, and take them back immeadiatly!!!!!!!!!!!! And then i would drain the tank, and restart it so no bacteria messes up the system.

Can we take a look at your water stats.
Cloudy eye is a symtom of a desease not a desease in its own right.
Cloudy eye parasites, fish tb, bacterial, old age, irratation, stress, poor diet, etc.
Black can be parasite, bacterial to cancer.

Do the fish huddle together, and flicking and rubbing.

Do a search on discus plague.
