My paired Kribs have had babies, I count roughly around 15-20, at fist I thought there was more but saw them this morning more in the open.

My question: The parents are doing a great job of keeping the other fish at bay but when I saw the fry this morning I started to think, is it instinct that keeps them in a bunch and not go swimming off on their own?

I can't put them in another tank because I haven't got one so I'll have to let nature take it's course and hope some survive, then my next question, I have ground some flake up very small hoping they may get some of it but will they?
Do the parents ever pick small bits up and spit it out for them or do they just wait till the fry can feed themselves?

as far as i no the feed of the egg sac for a bit (if thats what its called)
in a well mature tanks there will bw food in the grave they can feed on
ive never been able to drop flake for mine
sadly mine just get picked of one by one over a week my corys like eating them
dont think the parents pick bits up and spit it out
rest is i gues instint the parents will gather them up if the stray to far....

Thanks for the reply, I have 4 Corys and the parents keep chasing them away plus any other fish that venture near.

I noticed the parents decided to move the fry and the mother seemed to gather them up in her mouth and swim to another location, the father kept guard on the rest till she came back for more, I didn't realise they did that.

Yes the will keep doing that, gathering them up when ever they need too, it's at light out when the scatter that's when the corrys will pick them off.....

Good luck mate...

Lights out! Well that is interesting, I thought they might be safer then, so do you think leaving the light on will be better, though I thought doing that is bad for the fish in general, or what if I leave a table lamp next to the tank will that be better?

I'm not sure what I did was leave the room light on
When it's dark the fry will look for cover ie: in the gravel/sand the mother with gather them up and put then some where safe, but while the mother does this the corrys will start to pick then off

Well that's what happens evey time mine have fry
Good luck

I have a coconut shell in the tank and that is where they first started to spawn, then I noticed the parents had what I thought abandoned it because I saw them by a plant and a large stone, then I noticed the fry so that is why they left the shell obviously letting the fry have a swim about so to speak.
Any way this morning when I turned the lights on they were both in the shell so I am presuming that spent the night in there for safety.

I got myself another small tank today it's only a 24L but I'm hoping IF any of the fry survive it will be cycled by then as I've added mature media and perhaps I can transfer them, that's IF of course if not I may use it for a breeding/hospital tank in the future.
