We now have three little (1" long) Krib fry as need to move them out of their parent's tank as Rosy is getting a little territorial and they keep wanting to go home and she's getting ready for more babies :) Whilst the fry don't seem to be in any immediate danger (they're more than able to get out of her warning rushes) the advice seem to be to get them out of the tank. We have a 5 USG tank which we use as a hospital tank and don't have any great ambition to keep the babies till they're full grown. Will the 5 USG tank be OK for a couple of months so that they can grow on a little before we sell them / trade them at the fish shop?

Thanks

Miles

It will probably do the job while they are still youngsters, but personally I would look at 50-75% water changes on a daily basis.

This is because I believe young fish release chemicals/hormones into the water that will act as growth inhibitors, my Steatocranus casuarius breeding pair's second brood was relatively massive at ~50 and their growth rate seems much slower than that of the first brood of 13 in my Rio240, born in November and only now approaching ~5cm body length. In hindsight, I really regret moving them to my 620T and then my bigger footprint ~100l plastic tub as fry, I've learnt the hard way that next time such big fry groups need the space and volume (with the big regular water changes) to grow to a selling age at a decent pace.

at that sort of rate of water change I guess I don't need to bother with a filter then?

No, they will need a filter, because young growing fish need more food and therefore produce more waste. I feed my Ilyodon xantusi and Steatocranus casuarius youngsters at least three times a day, sometimes four.

Personally i wouldn't bother moving them, they will soon learn not to get close to mum and dad, mine did! Let them grow and shift them on when you can. You wont get much for them in a shop, they are two a penny.
