My pair of kribs keep getting jiggy and laying eggs, but they are in such a manic tank that the eggs get picked off before they ever get a chance to get anywhere.

I'm thinking that just for the experience of seeing it, I'd like to separate them from the main tank and allow nature to take it's course. My questions are these:

1. After the fry are hatched, what is the optimal length of time to remove the parents back into the main tank?

2. I'd like the spawning tank to also safely act as a grow out tank too. What sort of size are we talking about needing? Is a spare 24*12*15 I have knocking about going to do the trick?

Cheers,

Jules.

I'll tell you what I have/do then you can decide if it is right for you.

1 pair of kribs in a 20g with one cave at one end.
sand substrate. temp is 27-28C

6 other fish as dithers. I have used ZDs before but now use either dawn tetras or ember tetras as they are easier to catch and just as fast at getting away from the kribs.
once the kribs close up the cave hole and disappear for a day or two I remove the dithers because dithers can and often do eat the fry.
normerly a day or two later I see the fry for the first time. once I see fry I remove the cave
(this helps prevent the parents getting the urge to spawn again. if that happens they tend to eat the current fry.) I feed the fry infusoria twice daily for a week and then progress to crushed flake.
when fry loose their speckled markings, I either remove the fry to another tank or remove the parents.

I'm only on my second sucessful batch, so I may not have the perfect way of doing it
but it seems to work.

i have 1 major bit of advise when breeding kribs don't try to see eggsin the cave with a flashlight, it makes them it their eggs. I learnt that after my first few attempts :( , some people shine a light in the caves of kribs on purpose because they can't stop them breeding, I on the other hand have never had to face that problem.
