I have just purchased my very first pair of young kribs. Now the woman who served me in the fish shop wasnt very up on getting me a male and female so a kindly customer who was waiting to be served assured me that he had bred kribs and that I had a male and female.

Im not so sure. Im not really that bothered, but the larger one of the 2 doesnt like the smaller one and chases it furiously whenever it sees it. I have them in a planted 250L tank. My question is - is the tank big enough to house 2 males (if they are indeed 2 males).

250L should be fine!

I think I have 2 males - ive done a lot of research on the computer .....i'll try and get some pics up.

Females look more rounded than the streamlined males. The surefire way to tell is look at the tail. Female tails are kind of rounded and males are quite diamond shaped. The dorsal fin is also slightly different but those are the easiest ways to tell for beginners. The trouble I have found with Kribs is they are horrible fish and the most dominant of a group, male or female, will terrorise and kill every single other one unless there is PLENTY of space to escape. If the others are able to stick it out for a while, eventually the next most dominant of the opposite sex will get bold and start to venture into harms way. Then they usually pair up very easily. Because of their antisocial behaviour I only have 3 kribs now and I'm no longer breeding them and won't be replacing them.

^ I just checked BOTH my male kribs. They both have rounded tails. I don't believe that is an accurate way of sexing. Honestly, kribs arent that hard to sex, especially when they are mature. The female will be smaller, have a deeper belly, purple or red pelvic fins, and gold on thier tops fins( when in breeding condition). Males are paler, unless in breeding condition. They are very streamlined, and usually tend to have elongated fins, but that is not always the case.

I wonder if its a regional thing then. I have NEVER had a male with a rounded tail.

I have never found them to be overly aggressive to other kribs either.....like 40 adults in a 3' tank..

pics?

How 'young' are they?

Pics would help a lot.

Male and female can scrap as much as 2 males or indeed 2 females until/if they decide to pair up.
