Hi guys,

I recently added a Kole Tang to my relatively new 4 ft tank...

Their are already fish in their and they are doing well, feeding etc..

However, since Sunday (when I added the tang) he has hidden behind the same piece of rock and has only moved once.. Ive noticed him having a graze on the rocks from time to time... but im seriously worried about him not settling in properly..

Am I being over curious? Hes not eaten anything from me or barely moved since Sunday..

He looks healthy enough, just very inactive..

Did you quarentine him? Sounds like he has White Spot. You should always quarentine tangs as they are very suseptible (sp?) to this disease.

It just sounds to me that the fish is shy. Tangs IME, are big scardy cats and usually take more time to aclimate into the hirarchy of the established system. If it is picking off the rock it may just not like or know the food you are feeding. If it is picking off the rock I wouldn't worry because it is eating and this is your best clue. Give it a little more time and try a little of some other types of food.

Yeah, tangs are pretty skiddish. At least you know it is eating SOMETHING, and they wont starve to death, fish will eat what is offered over time. But try some live brine to maybe tempt him into eating. But I do hope he was QTd.

My Kole Yellow Eye took about a week before he got comfortable enough to be out all the time, but i'm sure he wuz worried about the regal tang, niger trigger, flame angel, and female gold stripe maroon clown, what else do you have in your tank?

the only other things I have in my tank are a tomato clown and a sulphur goby, I wouldnt think hed be scared of them surely?

Ive tried Frozen Brine & Flake... failing this im gonna get some nori at the weekend....

I have seen him munching on the rocks but hes very innactive...

Mind you at the LFS he had a habit of hiding behind their standpipe until he was offered food so maybe hes had a rough ride? My LFS quarantine all fish that come into their store, I dont have the means too.. but he looks in great condition from what I can see of him so maybe he just needs time?

-_-

I had a Kole that took a few weeks to get acclimated to its surroundings. He eventually got comfortable and would venture about the tank, until he saw me get close to the tank and then back into the rocks he went. Can't recall any special types of food for him, but remember many lip prints on my glass in the morning.

Hope this helps.

You have to remember that this fish is not tank bred. It was in the ocean only a couple of months ago at most and since then its been put in bags and travelled ahlf way across the world. Once in the shops tanks the environment is very different again.. lots of fish usually with no features and loads of public watching them. Then they reach your tank at home, new rocks etc but not the ocean, then of course there is the new noises in hte water.. hummings of powerheads, gurgling od overflow pipes etc. All of these conditions are alot for a fish to adjust to. Some will of course adjust faster of course so dont be overly worried just yet. The fact that its come out to graze is a good sign, it is probably still too scared to be on show whilst there is movement outside the tank.. lets face it the last time he trusted a human it caught him and put him in a bag :/
So give it time and im sure things will develope in the right manner. I would advise you get some nori/seaweed fromtaunton. Get a nori clip and put some inthere for it. You will be amazed how fast it will smell it and within a day or two im sure it will go looking for it.

This doesnt mean however that you should not be vigilant. Watch it closely for ich as they can catch them easily due to the easy manny in which they can get stressed.
