Hey people!

Im quite new to this forum, though iv been browsing a bit longer than my first post(this one!). Please see signiture of current stock and tank.

Sorry if this has been covered, but I didnt wanna mix topic nor hihack one!

Im after koi angelfish see link [post="Link"]http://freshaquarium.about.com/library/photoace/blangelfish11.htm[/post]

But iv found maidenhead aquatics sell them for £10 each for small-medium size which i find very high priced, also because other aquatics shops (when they do get them in) will sell them between £3 - £4.50. Anyone else have any ideas or seen these in shops in UK for reasonable prices and where?.

I often here people say that these are quite a weak strain of angels, any comments?

Any discussion and information on Koi angels welcome!

Thanks

I've definitely found Kois to be much weaker than some other varieties (chek out my old threads). £10 for a small Koi is way over the top, you usually see them around here for between £2.50 and £4 for small ones (even less if you go to a local breeder), with adults going for about £9 to £12 in our LFS.

Much as I love them, I can't recommend them as a hardy variety, I had nothing but heartache with mine, although two did make it through and went on to be healthy adults.

Impeccable water quality apparently helps (although our water was great). Don't buy any with torn/ragged fins - even if it just looks like they've been nipped a bit. A good varied diet can help too, lots of water changes, etc, etc. :good:

I have to disagree  i have 2 koi and 2 marble angels and out of the 2 i have to say the koi are the more healthy looking and dominant. However i believe its all down to the quality of the fish, some are week whilst others are strong. And dont forget u pay for the quality of the fish. 8)

It all depends on the breeding behind them. Any poorly bred strain of any fish wil be weak. I've found DD blacks to be weaker than koi, due to the inbreeding required to get that jet black velvet coloration. Koi with 90% orange are beautiful fish, just like the DD blacks, but many times the inbreeding required to get that much orange isn't done properly. If you look for koi with 50% or less orange you will probably have a more hardy fish.

Properly bred koi can get expensive, this is one of the more reasonably priced pro breeders in the US; http://www.angelsplus.com/Koi.htm

I just received some baby Koi angelfish that I purchased on Aquabid. They are adorable. I haven't had this type before, but I was very happy with the transaction and am looking forward to raising these little guys to adulthood. I know that their shipment here wasn't as smooth as it could have been--I saw the delivery driver throw the box around even though it was clearly marked "fragile", "perishable", "handle with care" and had red arrows pointing up.

The ones i can get from maidenhead for £10. have around id say 30% orange.....but again the price seems to high.

I think iv seen angelplus website, they dont ship over to the UK do they?

I can't really say if Koi are hardier compared to other varieties, but I have noticed regular strains of Angelfish have a better chance of surviving if they're a little bigger than then the dime sized ones. Maybe it's just a coincidence, I'm not sure. Tolak could probably clarify this in more detail.

Hmm... Well it might become a road trip trying to find a place that will sell them cheaper. Sometimes it depends on how expensive it was to bring them across the boarder. Here in Cayman the cost for an angel (Koi, Marble, Ect.) is 8 CI, around 5 US dollars.

Thats not bad, the only thing about travelling far to get them is, the fish are also adapted to the water they are in, and to many changes in water climate can be harsh.
