Kissfn's Fish In Cycle

Sorry, you can't

Mostly because I have never seen any proof that they do anything at all, at the same time, they very well might do something and occasionally, addition of these products coincided with something happening in the cycle.

My rule of thumb is, if you didn't pay for it, pour it in (can't hurt, right?), but don't waste money on them.

Thanks Kat! I had a strong feeling you would advise against these products and even I thought they sounded too good to be true. But the websites that sell them are telling every lie a newbie wants to see. (You can add fish 24 hours after adding this miracle potion!). False advertising should be against the law. I am glad I found this forum and nice people like you.

I am going to try to convince someone I know to give me a media donation. I do not want to hurt their colony so how much should I request?

False advertising is against the law, but a fish-in cycle is maybe not. If you follow the instructions, you will essentially be in a fish-in cycle situation, which they would easily be able to prove is the "norm", even though it is, in my opinion, animal cruelty (unless it is done properly, with water changes and plants). Apparently an animal cruelty law from 2006 should cover that, but it is pretty much the first time fish should be covered by law and one would still need to prove that the fish were suffering. Also that law has never been tested in court when it comes to fish, as far as I know.

Hello Simmons,
If your friends filter media is 6 months or more mature then he could possibly donate up to a third of his filters contents. When transporting it keep it submerged in some of the donators filter water and then simply replace your media(don't throw away)with the mature media, adding the water as well.

Hi Mr. Stanley,
Thanks for the knowledgeable response!

Pic of the most expensive water container I have ever purchased!

Gene, i would be inclined to remove the artificial plants & ornaments whilst cycling, will result in less cleaning at the end of the cycle.

Keith.

How are things going?

I was able to get 2 whole used filters from my step daughter's established tank so I have switched to a fish in cycle. I did a down to the gravel water change. Refilled with new water and added 3 Tiger Barbs late Saturday. I have been doing 50% water changes once a day (workdays) since Saturday and starting Wednesday (off days) I will be doing water changes twice a day. I use SeaChem Prime to dechlorinate the water and adding SeaChem Stability every day. I know this is not the recommended method but I am doing everything I can to keep these fish as healthy as possible.

How are the readings? If you got actually mature filters and you haven't seen any ammonia, nor nitrite, you're not in a cycle situation. Tiger barbs are great, but would be even better with 3-7+ more companions.

I agree with KK you want to think about increasing your group of tiger barbs to around 6+, the bigger the shoal the better which should keep their fin nipping to them selves and not other tank occupants. I have a large group of tigers and they are stunning when shoaling together.

Keith.
