Hi some one brought into work today what he described as a "king gourami"
the fish is black with a grey tinge when viewed in certain light. he is approx 10" long and 6" deep.
can anyone tell me the real name of this fish?
oh and apparently he is only a baby and will grow to 30"+

I searched on google and got lots of references to Elvis and cobras :dunno:
but nothing for king gourami.

Well it would be an osphronemus goramy undoubtedly. Where they got the 'king' name from is beyond me but there are only around 4 species of gourami that can get to 30" and those are all osphronemus sp. The grey color makes me think 'young goramy' so that's what I would expect it to be. If you do a google search for images of osphronemus goramy you might find some that match your fish.

once agian Silvia has done TFF proud
giant aka common gourami
at least we have a name and some info for it now, Thanks Silvia.

Sigh, if only I had a ridiculously big tank...... There's a foot and a bit long one at Maidenhead Aquatics....me want...

Giant gourami would have to be the only species of gourami that i can't stand, they're just so big and ugly, IMO, all the effort you need to go to in order to set up a tank for them is wasted on unsightly fish you put in it...:p

We are in agreeance on this one Doggfather... :p
Even when they are little they aren't cute as so many fishes are before they get big and ugly!!!!

Well actualy, they do go through a stage between the size of about 4" and 7" when they are very pleasant-looking, even cute, fish. I admit, at around 3" they look pretty ugly though. Kind of look like a scruffy, extra scrawny moonlight. As for larger individuals, I suppose it depends on your personal taste - I think most are beautiful but, admitedly, there are a few that develop very ugly nupital humps (they all do but some look better than others) and look rather out of proportion. IMO though, their sheer size and character make them worth it - even if you don't appreciate their appearance. :) I personaly love them.
