Hey all I am kinda new here so here goes.

I have a 55gal tank with 1 red tail shark, 1 pacaussimass (I don't know how to spell his name algae eater), 2 flying fish, 3 Mini neon Tetras, 1 sword tail, 2 neon orange Tetras and thats it for now :p. The filter is the Bio Wheel 450 penguin.

But here is the problem My tank is producing algae and alot of it. I clean my tank about twice a month but the algae keeps coming back. I have the lights on a timer they come on at 10am and go off at 8pm. I have gone to our fish place here in town (they have been around for 20yrs) they know what their talking about but can't tell me how to get rid of the algae all they keep saying is nothing you can do. That doesn't sound right but maybe thats just me.

So any help on this would be great.

See in the past I had a ton of fish in this tank then we went to disneyworld for a week and the filter died and so did most of the fish. So I started over with like 2 fish left out of 14.

WHAT!!!!!! 2 WATER CHANGES A MONTH!!!!!! YOU NEED TO DO A WATER CHANGE EACH WEEK!!!!!!!!!!

yep water change weekly, including gravel vac, also turn the time the lights are on down a bit.

Oh yeah Welcome to the forum :)

Not all Plecos grow big and they can't be relied on for cleaning algae. They are also big waste producers.
Ottos are more suited to cleaning algae, a group of 4+ would be fine for that tank.

A lot of Plecos only grow to about 1' with a few exceptions. There is a pinned topic on here with Plecos that grow 8" and under. A Bristlenose can grow between 4"-6" but with the amount of waste they produce, you wouldn't think it!
