My bala shark(whose temperary stay has been prolonged) was looking do desperate in his temperary 10G(which he shouldn't even have been in, long story for those that don't remember) than I placed him in the 55G with my african cichlids(you can see my stock in my profile). You guys advised that I might get some negative response from the other fish.
Reluctantly I added him to the tank and kept a close eye on him for a Few days.
He pretty much stayed towards the middle-top of the tank... I haven't seen him even go near the bottom.
He's pretty cool around the other fish... and they don't even notice him.
He keeps his distance, but sometimes lets other cichlids near him.
He's as healthy as a horse, or atleast none of his physical features have changed. he's not being nipped at atleast, which has happened before.

I guess I just think its cool that 2 different kinds of fish from around the world can survive healthily in the same tank, especially when one has a less than perfect record of allowing other species.

This comes to the difference of opinion of what success is. One says it's successful because the Bala is still alive. I say it's a failure so far because that bala isn't able to use it's natural territory - the bottom of the tank, probably because it's already occupied by a bunch of of fish it couldn't handle if it tried, and fish that are way more active then anything the bala would typically live with.

If he gets used to it and finds a spot for himself at the bottom and the cichlids ignore him, then more power to you, but if the bala continues to occupy only the top of the water I'd rethink whether it's really going well or not.
