Most Killifish are best kept in tanks by themselves (species tanks) this is because some are quite large, some are aggressive and some are plain small and timid. Water conditions of most community tanks do not suit a majority of killifish species. However there are exceptions to the rule. For a peaceful setup the killifish that I would choose if you intend to want to keep killi's alongside other community fish, would be. For a nice peaceful surface loving killifish I would pick Epiplatys Dageti Monroviae. Keep them in pairs or trios. Try to steer clear of Aplochelius Lineatus or Lineatus Gold. (Golden Wonders !!) They are nice when they are small but they become quite large and they are predators. Another couple of types of Killifish suitable for the community tank are Aphyosemion Australe (Cap Lopez Lyretail) there are a few different types ie Chocolate, Gold or Spotless and Aphyosemion Striatum. The species above are quite common and you should have little or no trouble obtaining pairs or trios from various sources. You may well see Fundulopanchax (Aphyosemion) Gardneri varieties in your search, these are very common indeed with lots of different varieties. Whilst these steel blue coloured killi's look stunning they are very boisterious. Keep only one pair or trio of the above aphyosemions as the females of the different species are very similar and cross breeding could result.
I have been keeping killifish for over 25 years now and I am a member of both the Americian Killifish Association (AKA) and the British Killifish Association (BKA). I hope this has helped you somewhat and if there is anything you are unsure of regarding Killifish then please let me know and I'll try to help you out.
P.S. If you are interested in killifish then as the post suggests above, do join the BKA or other organisation. It will enhance your knowledge of this wonderful side of the hobby.
