There have to be more killifish keepers on here!

Just got a few in my tank a couple weeks back, and they're super cool - neat shape, movement, colors, and behavior. These are the type that I have: http://www.petfish.net/misaje.htm

Anyone have experience keeping Kills in a large community tank? The 2 males I have got chased by the gold gourami at first, but that settled down after a couple of days, and they all seem to get along fine now (so far!).

I'm thinking of adding another pair or trio - possibly the same species, possibly a different one - anyone have any input?

I'm surprised at how few posts there are about such a neat bunch of fish.

I had two Aphyosemion australe in with pearl danios and wcmms etc there was no problem with them what-so-ever.
sadly they both died due to a bacterial infection, but that was nothing to do with being in a community tank.

killies = great

my experience is that they usually do best in a species tank, but it's always fun to try them in a community if you can get more. getting more is usually the problem with killies like yours.

with your tank mates, it's good they've done so well. usually the other top-loving fish will go after the killies. anabantoids and killies usually aren't good friends, but they keep their distance after a while

if you want them to mate, you definitely want a smaller tank with a sponge filter - a 10 G would be decent for a group of 6 or slightly more, or a 2.5 for a pair. Petfish has great articles on spawning.

if you want more killies, definitely check out the AKA at www.aka.org

 glad to see someone else on the forums caught the killi bug B)

I agree with Noel that a species tank is best.

Gardneri are good community killis, though. Peacefull community.

I had 1 in my 29g for 2.5 years. I only had one male, but it was his tank.
The ones I bought recently stopped eating and died. I have no idea why. :grr:

I wouldn't keep them with gold gouramis, personally. I had my 1 male with neons, glass cats, corys, and other very peaceful fish. I tried putting 1 of the new males I bought in my 29g, but now I keep more agressive fish, so I had to remove him.

Gardneri are plant spawners, so if you want to breed them, you'll want a 5.5g-10g species tank with lots of java moss, or a mop-head. I doubt they will breed in a community.

Max-How many do you have (M/F)?

I have 2 males, 1 female. They had several different kinds at the good local fish store, and I picked these ones not knowing anything about the differences. Glad I didn't get an "annual" type (I don't think, anyway) or one of the meaner types. I think they should still have some left if I want to go back for more. I had no idea they were considered rare or hard to come by - they certainly weren't cheap, but not really expensive either. I think about $7 or $8 each.

Congrats. They're not easy to find and $7- 8 is very good.

I paid $18.99 - $22.99 a pair. Most places only sell them buy the pair.

I need to sort some things out, then get a few pairs. They are great fish.
