Hi Mods,
I was just wondering if you could add a Killifish section into the Fish Index at the top of the home page, whereby I and a few other enthusiasts could add a few articles on this niche subject. They will be probably better off taken out of the Oddball section. This is due to members sending PMs to me and requesting some information on certain species. I spend a lot of time rewriting instructions over and over again and I just thought if there was a section that once written it's there for all to see and use as a reference.
I also spend a lot of time and effort (as do all members) typing out details of breeding only to recieve (or not in some cases) answers like "I've changed my mind about them or "forget about it, one of the pair has died". To this end I would like to relate the details I have written the once and commit them to a specific and specialised section.
Any comments or criticisms would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
BigC

I think thats a great idea, i know very little about Killifish but would be very interested in the articles and write ups.

I think it's a great idea, I think with more information more people would be inclined to start keeping these fish. I know that in the past I have always been put off keeping them because I thought they were really difficult to keep, and killifish information isn't really available on the net yet.

Hi, a seperate bit for killies would be great. Have just bought some eggs which are hatching now. Joined this forum last week in the hope of finding some information, hints and problems encountered from other killi keepers. Will watch out for it, thanks.

Killifish aren't actually oddballs though they are the family, Cyprinodontidae. So aren't oddballs their cyprinids?

A Killifish section sounds great. I have also been looking for information on them,[because I keep a pair of Golden wonder killifish], but I can't seem to find alot of good information that will help me. After my first female Killi died, I got another female and I am now trying to breed my pair, so a section on Killifish would be great. :D

I see no point. For the tiny amount of species available, and the smaller number who keep them, it's not worth it. If you're going to want that, in all intrests of fairness you'd have to seperate everything, eg, tetras, loaches, rainbows, danios, all having their own section.

I see no point.
That was to be expected.

For the tiny amount of species available
Absolute rubbish! Laziness prevents people from finding out more about these gems and where to source them. There are over 770 valid species.

and the smaller number who keep them
You are correct, that on this forum there is not much traffic. Then again people need to be educated. But there is a vast global following.

it's not worth it
That statment says it all. Therefore I might as well give up trying to educate fellow forum members and waste my time elsewhere!

Many thanks

And totally think there should be one. We are a huge forum and why should we be stuck in smaller ways.
Not that we are - as there are many sections and things are always improving and changing. But I really think it's a great initiative BigC and it will add real value.
Instead of just being chucked in with the OddBalls.
Move up and on I say !

Yes, but 'valid species' is completely different to species available. Out of the stock lists I've got, one has 17 species, Trimar has 10 species and BAS has 3. Few people are going to want to fork out for rarer species or to join killie societies to 'collect 'em all' as it were, especially when some of the most stunning are the easiest to get (A. Australe, for instance). If people are that bothered about getting and finding out about killies, they can join a killie forum.

Yes, there may be a global following. But there isn't a 'global following' here. There are more posts about brackish fish than killies, and they don't even have their own section. If people want more specific killie info, they can use Fishbase, Google or whatever.

Besides, your use of the word 'educate' annoys me. Educate about what? It's incredibly patronising, like the reason we don't have a seperate killie section on the forum is because we're all stupid people who don't appreciate whatever qualities killies may have. I'm not saying you meant that, but thats how it sounds.

You can have a killie section, fine, when there's a Brackish section, a Loaches section, a Puffer section, a Tetra section, a Danio section, a Bichir section, a Cory section, a Parasitic Catfish section, and any other section you care to think of. Killies do not take precedence over any of those groups.

I think its a good idea, killies are a completely seperate group of fish and if there were enough profiles their own section in the index would be justified.

Get a few profiles written up and added to the oddballs index and when there is enough to warrent adding a killies index we can move them over.

Feeshy, corys and parasitic catfish are still just catfish, loaches are Cypriforms and brackish fish arent all one family, brackish catfish are still catfish, brackish Cichlids are still Cichlids and brackish oddballs are just oddballs that dont have enough species in a family to need a seperate section.
Just because you personally dont have much access to killie fish dedicated killie fish enthusiasts can lay their hands on hundreds of species through dried eggs being sent in the post or shipping of live fish from Europe and the USA where the killie fish hobby is bigger. You dont have much access to rare oddballs and catfish either but it doesnt make them worthless.

 People educate themselves when the information is available to do so. When people don't even know these fish exist (many don't! as they do not see them in shops etc.) then how are they to know any better ?

Provide access to information and people can educate themselves :good:
