I have one pink female betta that i named boo(i bought her on halloween), and a blue female betta that i named eskimo.

I used to have just boo, but then i added two more female bettas to my 5 gallon with boo in it. Boo tried to kill both new female bettas, ( they were all the same size) and one died, i seperated boo from eskimo before they could kill eachother. I think this might have happened because before then, boo had become seemingly fat, but i dont think she was diseased. someone told me she was ready to spawn and full of eggs and was just competeing with the other females.

Can someone tell me why they tried to kill eachother? Do i just have particularly aggressive fish?

Bettas are aggressive, sometimes the females can be just as bad as the males. One female can easily dominate a five gallon tank.

The best thing to do, if you were to try again, is to completely redecorate the tank before adding more girls, to destroy her territory. You could even go as far as removing her and then redecorating, then adding her at the same time as the new.

Overall, I wouldn't keep more than one girl in a 5'er, also, she could be so aggressive that she'll never get along with another. I've found that the longer they're alone - the less sociable they become.

I ran into a similiar problem on friday. I have a 10 gallon tank with 4 females..While I was at walmart I saw this tiny little female all by herself.Long story short I brought her home. What I did was remove all the females fro the 10 gallon tank. Then reintroduced them all together. well it didn't go well at all.....The new female was scared hiding in corner all clamped. I removed her and put her into a divided tank with her own space. My other four had established the order in the tank.So no more will go in there.

Females can be just as aggressive as the males.Just all depends.

Thanks for the help, and thats what i was thinking, that she was just a particularly unsociable female and she had never been with other fish, i bought her almost full grown in one of those betta cups. The other two girls came from a tanks full of females. Oh well, she is happy now in a large tank with lots of neons and it is fun to watch her bury herself in the plants. :D
