Hello everyone!
Saw this section so thought I would post a little about me. I'm 21, 22 tomorrow
, and just recently got my first 40 litre fish tank and happily enjoying this hobby, I definitely think it is one of the best things I have took part in, even though I am new to the whole experience. I currently live on my own but have been with my boyfriend for over 2 years, and reside in England. I work in a petrol station at the moment but actively looking around for a new job in the care sector, I have done this before when I was 19 and loved it so wish to pursue it as a career! I did want to be a vet but found out I was allergic to both cats and horses, a disappointment still to this day
Anyway!
I got my tank last Monday and messed up a few times, being ignorant and not doing things properly with the water etc., so I started again! There were no fish in it at this time so no one was hurt in this messy process! I read a manual online and followed it exactly and was happy with my setup in the tank. I have a mixture of both fake and real plants, 70% of them being real, a nice little log tunnel and a ceramic pot as my decorations - nothing too extravagant.
Here are some pictures: (I did move some stuff around and made it less cluttered then what it was, so the fish have both hidden and open areas to be depending on their preference.
When I first started my tank I added both the API Stress Coat and Stress Zyme and it seemed to help a lot visually in the tank. I was naive, not knowing what I have read now, and took my water to a pet shop where they tested it and obviously everything was fine - but there were no fish in it so of course things would be perfect. Anyway, under the LFS' guidance I purchased the following fishies:
2 x Swordtails, one red with black fins and the other black with ocean blue spots that light up nicely under the light.
2 x balloon molly's, one black with large fins and the other paler, which I have now found out is pregnant =/ (27/06/2011)
The 2 swordtails are adventurous but the balloon molly's always hide behind my filter, one looks like he is always struggling against the current even though the flow rate is set to minimum and when food is involved he is fine
But they both are extremely timid, only coming out of their hiding place for food which is a shame
I was advised to buy the master testing kit which I did today and these are my levels:
PH - 6.8
Ammonia - 0ppm
Nitrite - 0ppm
Nitrate - 5ppm
I thought these readings were odd because I have only had the tank going properly for around 6 days, so double checked and still the same readings so here is a picture to see if anyone else thinks I may have read anything wrong:
The values are from left to right - PH, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate.
Well that's me and my tank, any hints, tips or even general advice is always welcome as I have a lot to learn and everyone here seems really friendly.

Your tank looks beautiful! I have the same test and they are pretty accurate. I take my water to a specialty fish store when I want to double check my readings which helps. Good luck with your new tank!
