Hi there,

I just got a brand new 55 gallon tank which I'd been dying to get for years. :hyper:

I want to get keyhole cichlids. Does anyone know of anywhere online to get them? I can't find them anywhere.

I'd get like four of them, but if I ordered them (either online or special order from a pet shop) I'd have no way of sexing them. If I ended up with, say, 3 males and 1 female, or 3 females and 1 male, would it be a problem? :/ Would just getting two be a better idea?

Also, how small of fish can I put in with keyholes without worrying about them getting eaten?

I'd really appreciate any feedback. Thanks muchly. :flowers:

As for smaller fish, don't worry about them unless you have guppies or other similar sized fish, the smallest I would try would probably be some large neons (with 5" keyholes) :) Where are you located? Some US fish shipping sites are liveaquaria.com, aquariumfish.net, and aquabid.com :)

Jeff Rapps also has keyholes on his current stock list. he can probably sex them for you if you were to ask. but he also has a minimum order of 50 dollars US and @ 8.50 per fish, you can imagine what all you would have to get.

Thanks for the replies. :)

Dwarfs: I'm located in the U.S. Sorry I didn't say that before. Unfortunately, I already looked at the sites you mentioned and couldn't find any keyholes.

Oh well, *hopefully* I can special order them from the pet store.

 Holy Moses!! Jeff Rapps is from Phillipsburg, NJ!!! I just moved from there in May!! How crazy is that. :hyper:

Don't take any chances - avoid little fish like neons or cardinals. Taller bodied tetra's are a much more ideal choice.

My Keyholes are over 3 years old now and have never bothered the Glowlights in the tank at all. They are very shy fish that will not bother anything but tiny fry. My Cockatoo Dwarfs bred in the community tank and the Keyholes were scared to death of going anywhere near the much much smaller mother. The tetras were far more of a problem to the fry than the cichlids!
