is there any way of keeping shrimp alive in a tropical tank?

i like the idea of having live shrimp in my tank, but nothing to expensive as the will get eaten. i Feed my Reed fish river shrimp from time to time but they don't last that long in the tank, as i beleave that they requirere a lower temp? so is there any shrimp that is cheap and will readly reproduce?

What temp is your tank? I think most shrimp for sale at LFS should survive at normal tropical temps.

There are shrimp that reproduce in fresh water (like Cherry shrimp) but most stay quite small. If your exisiting fish are eating the river shrimp then they will probably eat these too.

One idea might be fan/filter shrimp as these are bigger than the usual algae shrimp so would be less likely to get eaten by the fish. I've not kept any yet but plan to get some when i have a well aged tank with plenty for them to filter.

If you mean live shrimp you can buy from your super market then no as they are salt water. There are a number of different freshwater shrimp on the market, such a cherry shrimp, organe shrimp, bumblee bee shrimp, Rock shrimp, ghost shrimp and quiet a few others. They're generally easy to care for however they do require pretty decent water quality.

I've had Yamato shrimps, and never had any luck with them!

I dont know what i do wrong, temps fine, quality is good.

I had 2 in a smaller tank and they turned mad, turned yellow and starting swimming into the glass... eventually dying.

The other 3 were in my community tank, not seen them for a good while now so god-nose!
