I've had a 30g aquarium with one male and three female swordtails for quite a while and even though one of the females feels a bit left out, everything has worked out just fine so far with almost no aggression and no injuries at all. Well, I'm now considering (very seriously) getting another male (and of course another female to keep the ratio right), but I'm not sure if that will be okay. The male I have right now and the male I want to get is hi-fin. I'm not too worried about the hi-fin male, because my normal male has a deformed fin and isn't a super swimmer himself, so I think they'll be matched, I'm just scared that they're going to be fighting all the time. Is it crucial that I get three males, or will the two males be fine if I have enough females. Also, since the hi-fin male shouldn't be able to breed, is he still going to try and mate with the females, or will he leave them alone? (I've never had a hi-fin swordtail before, so I wouldn't know)

no, because I already have three females. but that's not the point, I just really need to know if one can keep two males together! I've read that you need three males to balance the aggression in an all-male tank, but I don't know about mixed gender tanks!!!

I kept 2 males in a tank for a year and there was no aggression between them at all. Since the upgrade I have put 2 more in there. Unfortunately 1 has died in my hospital tank due to ICH.

But there is still no aggression what so ever.

I suppose that basically means it depends on the fish...thanks for the reply! Any more opinions would be appriciated!

well I'll give it a shot. If there is any aggression, I can separate them. :)
