anyone know what size tank you'd need for discus? Just curious because i love those lil fishies and wanted to study alot about them so i might be able to keep em in my tank once i make it.

(sorry that this was posted here, i didnt know where to post for discus... sorry)

Hi vixen, Discus are New World Cichlids!
As for tank size I'll let someone tell you the specifics....all I know that mine is big enough! hehe
Its something like 10gallons to one discus...but Im guessing on that one!
Also they are best kept in a group of say 4 or more, I only have two because I am a discus beginner, and not to mention they are expensive little buggers!

i have heard several figures about the tank size and im wondering about it too.

isnt the minimum size tank a 55? i cant imagine having 2 discus in a 20 gal or something like that. those guys get pretty big

the constant water changes would get me though... every other day? eek-i can barely get mine done once a week

i would love some pure yellow discus like these

and of course red melons and red marlboros

exactly.... im trying to figure it all out myself and then i gotta learn about the the filters and how to change the hardness/ph.... other stuff
looks like ill be studying for a wile

then i gotta see where to have them

Some good info to begin with on water conditions and feeding  I'd say a minimum of 55 gallons for 4 fish. Despite what people say, if you can't keep them in a group, don't keep them at all to put it bluntly. It would be better to save up for a little while longer and get more fish than dive into it and find one of your fish is harrassing the other, which will happen if keeping discus in 2's.

I know it's a pain to save up for fish  i'v been saving for a 180 gallon tank for at least 6 months and with my income of $30 a week, it's a very very slow proccess but i know when i finally buy the tank and fish (i'm going for discus too :D ) it'll all be worth the wait

30 bucks a week? whats minimum wage in australia??!?!

its not the money that will restrain me... its the fact i have no where to put a 55gallon tank! i mean that would be really big.... and i just dont have that space where i am. how big roughly would a 30gal be? (more wide than tall)

i get £30 a week..... well... a day :p

You can get a 40 gallon breeder tank with the dimensions of 36x18x15" but this still would only be big enough for a ready established breeding pair of discus, as some others have said the minimum size really is a 55 gallon and IMO prefferably a 75 as the 12" width of a 55 is a bit limiting.
I would advise keeping and breeding a few other peaceful cichlid species before venturing into the realms of discus, angel fish and Appistogramma dwarf cichlids would be good starting points.

Remember, you have to learn to walk before you can run.

i dont know what to do, i either want to try and learn as much as i can about discus so i can make them a perfect tank OR try for a marine type tank... both are quite hard

Considering i still go to school it's a fair amount for 3 1/2 - 4 hours of work, for my age group anyway.
