Really never thought about keeping bettas, but recently have been giving it some thought.

Do you need a heater to keep them or filter?

You really don't have to have a filter as long as you don't mind doing water changes. A heater is recommended to keep temperatures from fluctuating. ;)

Although TBH I'm finding temps flunc less without a heater. In my heated tank, one minute the tanks warm, the next its freezing.

Yeah - I won't ever keep bettas without a heater in the tank again, unless (maybe unless) wherever I am keeping them at has a furnace and very regulated temps. At home, our temps fluctuated way too much and 2 of my boys chewed their tails off. I put them into a heated 10G (divided) tank and they loved it.

You don't really need a filter unless your tank is so big that you can't do 100% or near 100% water changes and clean it regularly.

If you have the room and can go for it, 5 gallon tanks aren't bad, just make sure if you get a filter that has any kind of current that you create a place in teh tank that is current free.

My betta is lovin his new aprox. 1 gallon bowl. Made a beautiful bubble nest. :)

Bettas are very easy to keep, in my opinion the easiest fish to keep.

And oddly, they have the most personality of any fish I've encountered. I owned goldfish in the past, and while they swam around and ignored me, my betta seems to actually work to keep my attention. Sure, they're not as interactive as a mammilan pet, but... uhn.... I sound silly. I'm sure I can't be the only one that thinks that way, though.

No you're not the only one
I love my little guy. He's so funny. He likes following my finger around the water and once he catches up to it he doesn't know what to do with it so he backs off...lol. He knows exactly where to go for a feeding and wont have it any other way. IME bettas are also more hardier than any other fish. I've had mine for over a month, whereas wish other tropical fish I've only had for a max of a month because they all seem to die on me even when I try everything to keep them alive. Obviously I wasn't doing enough. But I dont think I'll ever go to tropical fish after having a betta. ;)

my betta loves it with my other fish (discus, clowns, tetras, ect) and he keeps showing off his long fins to the discus i think he is gay  Well anyway he is the easyest fish i have ever had i even think he is easier than platys so dont worry just try to keep him as happy as possible and nothing will go wrong (dont put the little guy in with platys, mollies they will fin nip so will alot of other fish)

Mine will have his own tank soon without heating, filteration as he will keep warm from the tank above him and will be cleaned out 3 days a week.

There is something about them that grabs you and won't let go. I have three bettas now, and I have already decided where that fourth tank is going to go. Just have to give the hubby time to adjust in between fish.

i have 4 i think they are fun to keep. mine all do something silly to get my attention....not to mention lightning likes the coffee machine :p
