mud·puppy also mud pup·py (mŭd'pŭp'ē) pronunciation
n., pl. -pies also -pies.

1. Any of several large North American salamanders of the genus Necturus, especially N. maculosus, that live in damp regions and have conspicuous clusters of dark red external gills. Also called water dog.

Anyway, I work at a sawmill that is (unfortunetly) about to be expanding in to an area that is currently for lack of a better discription a swamp. Not sure how they got around various wetlands regulations but they did. In this pond, there are for sure bluegill, bass, and there are rumors of stocked channel cats. I've seen several of the former caught on various lunchbreaks. There are also mudpuppies (at least thats what I called them when I was a kid in Wisconsin, hence the above discription).

Im wondering if anyone has ever kept one. While normally I wouldn't take animals out of the wild, this pond will be a parking lot by spring, and I have to assume that living in a tank in my living room would have to be better than being buried alive by a bulldozer.

I've been having a fantasy of what I've been refering to as a 'sawmill biotype' (this is what happens when you have to fish keepers who work alone together on a graveyard shift). A large tank just below the large south facing living room window. A 'shelf' in the tank to grow cattails out of, various other 'native plants (mostly out of that pond) and a mudpuppy and a couple of bluegill swimming around. Im picturing something around 150 gallons or so, hopefully wider than tall.

Anyone ever kept one and or ideas on care? and more importantly, anyone have a good idea on how to catch one?

This site seems to have a lot of info;

A 150gallon tank would be great, although i'd be wary about putting fish with this critter as aparently they eat fish as part of their diet, and consideirng mudpuppys can grow up to 13inches long, a lot of types of fish would probably count as food for this critter. I have no experience with these critters, however my main concerns/questions i would be asking myself if i were to keep one would be;

a. Will these critters only eat live foods? If they cannot be moved onto dead/prepared foods, then ensuring the mudpuppy gets a varied diet could be a problem. Also how much to feed and how often would be an important question.

b. They can live for up to 20years+, do i really want to commit myself to such a long term pet?
