i was thinking of getting crayfish and i was thinking is it hard to keep them and do they get on with other fish

Crayfish are very easy creatures to keep. They're also more fun than fish. As for them getting along with fish, sometimes it works well, other times it ends in someone dying. You never really know until you try it, but be prepared for the worst, then you can't be disappointed.

As prev said keeping cray fish is great. Here is mine, Dr Zoidburg.....she is about 6" now.

I keep her by herself in a 3ft tank but have kept her with guppies before and she didnt even try to go for them but I wouldnt recomend keeping them with fish although it seems alot of people do.

They are a really interesting creature to keep and Ive found Ive grown very attached to her and hope sh is around for a long long time.

I feed mine with tetra variety wafers and a jumbo prawn every 3 days, very easy to keep.

They are great escape artists though so make sure your hood is secure. My first crayfish, Pinchy, decided to make a bid for freedom and didnt make if far so beware but once a again, very interesting creature to keep and watch, also very easy to keep.

I suggest a little research on google of something and if you have the space to get a new tank I say go for it.

cray fish are inverts not actually fish they are lovely animals, though I don't personally think keeping them with fish is a good idea. they are scavengers and omnivours needing vegetable matter, mine loves peas and carrots, he also has prawns, mussels, white bait, etc. they eat most things (though mine won't touch sprouts :D ). As big mick said they will escape at any opportunity so investing in a good lid is a must. Mine is great fun to watch and I think you'll be suprised at how attached to it you will become is you get one.

thanks everybody has anybody ever bred them in their tanks and i also heard they up root your plants is that true and
what would be the best food to give them

They will uproot plants because the dig little tunnels to live in, its quite amazing to watch them digging, they make a little 'snao plough' with their claws.

As for feeding they will eat most things, I feed mine Tetra variety wafers, catfish pellets and of course King prawns (once every 3-4 days)

Ive never bred them or even tried to, too many horror stories of them attacking eachother when keeping more than one, you'd need lots of space.

I did see a breeding pair for sale in my LFS, they were both about 9" for £40......I was so tempted and would have if I didnt already have the one Ive got.

hey all,

mine lives in a 100gallon tank with six red bellies and some tigerbabrs and some firemouth cichilids, he has never attacked the other fish sometimes mite square up to the red bellies but they never fight or try to eat eachother.

we feed him some veg and sometimes if hes good some prawns too.

and yes they can destroy a tank overnight cos as big mick said they love to dig, and it is truly amazing watchin them they are fantastic creatures and i will be sad to see him go if he does!!!!!

we had a crayfish in a previous tank and he destroyed it, and killed most of the lil fishies he was with, so sometimes it will work sometimes it jus wont.

good luck keep us posted!!

Lucifer :)

I have one now for over a year. DO NOT PUT THIS ANIMAL IN WITH YOUR FISH!!!!!! Semi-aggressive means JUST THAT. A crayfish should be in a species only tank. Trust me on this one. Don't give yourself the heartbreak of waking up one morning to the skeleton of your favorite fish. They are fast....deceptive...decisive...deliberate....and deadly when they decide to strike. SH

thanks all iam getting one after all and hes getting a big tank all for himself
thanks everyone :D :D :D

Good aquarist you are....they like most any kind of sinking pellet....shrimp pellets, pelleted flake. Drop it in front of him and watch him grab it..back up and eat. After a while they become nocturnal so, make sure you drop it at night. Have fun. They ARE interesting to watch. SH
