Hi
This is my first posting on this forum so please bear with me if my posting is not of the norm!
I have had my tropical fish tank up and running now for about 4 months, I made sure that all was set up correctly before putting in my first batch of fish. I took time researching what fish can live together and also confirmed this with the chap in the fish shop.
I put 10 fish in to start off with and they were fine for about 2 weeks and then I started loosing them one by one. I had samples of the water checked and again this was confirmed that all was OK. After watching the tank for a few evenings I noticed that the guarami that was in there was chasing some of the other fish around and it seemed to be a regular occurence, so again I spoke to the fish shop who confirmed that on the odd occasion they can be a little nasty and that this was probably the one that was killing off my fish. So it has been rehomed at the fish shop where it will see out its days!
I then decided that I would re-stock and made a purchase of guppies, mollies and a few other community fish. They all seemed to settle in well. BUT and here is the BUT over the weekend, I lost four fish, two of the new ones and two from the first batch and then last night I lost two more!!! Had water checked and this is OK.
Can anyone give me some pointers on what it might be. They seem to be fine one minute and then dead or lying on their side the next.
I feel like giving up on the whole thing but I really love seeing the fish in there and like chilling out watching them.
HELP!!!!

Firstly, I'd recommend that you get your water re-tested or even better, buy your own test kit.

There could be several issues with your tank. Firstly, did you cycle your tank correctly before adding fish? If so, then is there any possibility that you could be overfeeding them? I jump to this conclusion as you say that they are lying on their side. This could be due to swim bladder disease from overfeeding. Are there any other fish in your tank or anything else that could be causing your fish extremely high levels of stress? It would be useful if next time your water is tested, you could post your water parameters

Also, how big is your tank?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

First off - have you cycled your tank before adding fish? For any of us to give any useful advice can you tell us more about your tank:

What size? What your current stocks are. We need to know your stats - particularly Nitrite, nitrate, Ammonia, PH. If you haven't got a tester kit, get one quick! It looks like you may be in a fish-in-cycling situation. Have a look at the link in my signature line.

Until we have more details, it's a bit tough to work out what's going on.

DON'T GIVE UP! We can help - we just need the right info.

I'm off home from work so won't be around for a few hours. If you can post the relevant info - someone may be able to get on and help you before me

Good luck

Welcome to the forum!

it can be hard when you lose fish without knowing why, but it sounds to me that you didn't cycle your tank properly and are now in a fish-in cycle. i'd have a read through here and it should help.

you should also go and pick up your own test kit, preferably the API test kit.

how big is your tank, how long has it been running, and what is it stocked with?

good luck!
