Blue/green algae is actually a bacteria :)
Treating it with anti-bacterial will kill it I think, I had this myself and just gravel vac it out did a 3 day black out and it was gone.

anti bacterial will also kill the beneficial bacteria in your filter. First try a 3day blackout, remove as much as possible, cover the tank up so no light gets in. and dont feed the fish. Stop CO2 and nutrients.

Thanks for all your replies.

I have installed a 18W T8 in my hood so I now have 48W - which I think,for me, it's just right.

What I need to know now is how to secure the cables in place in the hood.I will need access weekly to change the filter pad and to have a hoover and a scrape of the glass,so I really need the cables to be tidy.

At present I have used duck tape, but one of the pieces has already peeled off.I have a tube of silicon, but the cable doesn't want to stay in place long enough for that idea to work.Could I place small pieces of tape here and there to stop the cable moving and add squirts of the silicon here and there ?I have never used silicon before. How strong is it and would it hold the cable in place even with the weight of the ballast pulling on it every time I take off the hood ?

Hope that you guys can help.I'm almost ready for the set up.
Today I have painted the back of the tank black(three coats of emulsion + 2 coats of varnish) and it looks great.I forgot to get some ammonia from B&Q,but that can wait.

Plants are being posted to me on Monday from "PlantsAlive" and I have three Java Ferns reserved for me at the garden centre where I work,so hopefully Tuesday night will be set-up night. :hyper:

Can't wait.
