hi, today after much hunting i decided to buy a juwel rekord 96 set-up for the good price (i thought) of £107, the tank is 81 cm x 46 cm x 31 cm which is plenty big enough for me, once i have decided whether i want sand or gravel- or a mix of both- i will then plant up, and add rocks etc, i have been told to use safe-guard with the tap water, will this be all i need to create a good environment for fish, i was thinking of keeping two parrot fish, or something similar. is the tank big enough for some kind of plec aswell?

it should be fine. as long as you treat the water correctly. now a lot of people hate sand because it is damn near impossible to vac properly compared to gravel.

is safe-guard appropriate treatment then, can i add this weekly, then add some to the water i add when i do a 20% water change?

If you add safe-guard weekly it will build up in your tank. What you want to do is to add it when you first set up the tank, then do a weekly water change of 220% and treat those 20% only with more safe-guard. Can't answer the question about parrots- but others will do that. As for the plec, yes- but you need to be careful as to the species. You must NOT get a common plec, or a sailfin, but a bristlenose would do fine, or a clown plec. Bristlenoses have the advantage of being active in the day, not too shy and eating algae- though they do also need to be fed algae wafers and vegetables.

I have two Rekord 96 aquariums and I use black sand with no problems. It's easy to syphon waste away because it just settles on the surface of the substrate. Sand is also a good / kinder choice if you intend to keep any bottom dwelling fish such as Corydoras, Gobies, etc.

I think Blood Parrot Cichlids require a minimum of around a 100lt tank to be comfortable, but I think they may out-grow that. Don't take my word for it, though, as I'm not too knowledgable about Parrot Cichlids.

As dwarfgourami stated, a Bristlenose would be a good choice or, alternatively, try a Rubbernose Plec. A shoal of dwarf Otocinclus catfish would also suit an aquarium of your size.
