Hi all,

My lighting unit for my juwel rio 180 has blown up AGAIN!!! Checked all the fuses and bulbs and there all ok, i have a surge protector on my tank so it shouldnt of been that Im really really hacked off Cuz this si the second time this has happend since i bought the tank 6 months ago.

I had to send the last one back to juwel in norfolk uk at a cost of £8 and now im gogin to have to do it again. Im getting the take it or leave it approach from Juwel ref the money.

£16 isnt alot of money but whats to say this thing won't blow up again in another 3 months.

I'm a man of principles and this has really narked me off as it means again another 5 days ish with cling film acting as a lid while i await a replacement light system.

Grrrr

Anyone else had these problems?

A very Narked off Dan

why are you sending it back?
did you buy the tank from a shop?
if so it is their responsability to replace your multilux unit not yours

Hi, sorry you've been having problems. I bought a Rio300 Dec 2005 and in March the lights went (don't know if it was one tube or both as they both go off for safety reasons. As I'm sure you know). I went back to where I bought the tank and I had to buy 2 new tubes. I was not pleased. He did give me a discount. I am registered at the Juwel website so I emailed them. I never heard back! I will buy Juwel for my next tank because I like the tanks but their customer service sucks IME The lights have been ok since then. Hope yours are too. :) I think it's mean that you had to pay the postage.

The shop i bought them from is from where i used to live and only 30 40 miles away from the juwel HQ in norfolk so i would have to post them to the shop who would then seek a replacment from juwel so ive skipped the middle man and gone directly to the source. Im taking the whole unit to Maindenhead Aquatics 2moro to see if they will give it a quick test for me with 2 new bulbs. I think they might as customer service is top notch there.

Im trying to find my elec indication pen thingy to give the lighting unit a quick once over as i suspect it might even be the on off switch.

Its a well known problem with Juwel tanks, i had it happen twice with my Rio 300. I never recomend Juwel to anyone, their electricals are utter rubbish.

I recently spoke to a Juwel rep concerning the poor quality of Juwel lighting and he admitted to me that Juwel have been having a lot of problems with the Multilux systems in general. He claims that the problems come down to faulty on/off switches. He also said that Juwel heaters are also a big problem and showed me the new heater design which is (apparently) unbeakable.

The women on the phone said something about how they have recently changed the way there lights work now as they had a small number of problems.

I could change the on off switch myself with ease, but if its not that then i will end up voiding the guarentee.

i have a spare £80 can i buy a lighting system for the rio 180 for that??

You can get a cheap luminaire off ebay for that about £75 can get you a 3 or 4 bulb T5 unit for what I am guesing is either a 100cm or 4ft tank. Take a look they are £1+£15 postage at the mo and normally end up around the £50-£60+postage mark. Also loads of lighting options on ebay at the mo.

Anyone know anythign about the above?

I havnt heard about putting two lighting units on before.. i would of thought i would have to make wee sunglasses for my lil blighters if i did that

seems like your having problems with the rio lighting, why buy another of the same type? If you do end up sending it off ask what was wrong with it, even better get a different make of lighting. Good Luck

The Juwel tanks with the centre brace have a problem with the brace snapping. I seem to remember reading that the problem is when people modify the lights and put more than Juwel intended thus overheating the plastic. Just thought I would mention it. I could be remembering the facts wrong so in that case I am sure someone will correct me. I just have the standard light set-up and have had no problems with the centre brace (fingers crossed!). :)

Im going to go down the road of send it off to them £8 to myself and then when i get it back to complain like hell and contact trading standards ref the money for sending it back now twice maybe more.

Ive never had a problem with the unit snapping in the middle but can see it happening obv juwel only want to make the unit as strong as it needs to be making it stronger costs more and its all about the money
