They are what they are.
Not the best, and far from the worst.

I have a trigon which I bought second hand which made it good value, and haven't really had any problems (touch wood).

If I was looking to keep big messy fish, then I wouldn't choose a Juwel system 'cos the filters wouldn't cope, but with my set-up of low tech planted tank with plenty of small thin bodied fish it does the job quite admirably thank you very much, and whilst the base and trim might not be my first choice, its certainly far from offensive in the corner of the living room.

Juwel type tanks are great for beginners, as it's all ready to go bar the cycle. But when you realise the filter isn't great + it's an eye sore & you want to rip it out, then you may as well buy a basic no frills tank & a canister filter.

I was all set to buy a Juwel Vision 180 but when I realised I would be throwing away (selling on ebay) more than I would be using, I decided against it. They're fine as beginners set ups but as soon as you want to use an external filter or another heater they don't make much sense. They're reasonably well made and cheap and actually look quite nice so in that respect they're fine. They have their good points as well as bad points. Unfortunately I ordered my external Eheim filter before realising that Rena and Fluval come with cannister filters so I went for a basic tank/cabinet setup without any accessories. Fingers crossed it's well made!

On a side note, does anyone know if the Fluvals can be used with any other brand of external cannister filter other than Fluval, say Eheim for instance?

I'm quite happy with my Rekord 70. It all depends what you want them for. As scubadoo says, they're absolutely fine for smallish fish and it's perfectly possible to grow plants well in them - if you're sticking to low tech:

I think they a quite well made and look attractive but I think the filter is not
ideal. The filter will suite planted tanks as , for an internal filter, it has a very
large surface area for bacteria growth, but I think the downside is its turnover rate.
If you keep larger fishes you would definitely have to upgrade the filter to an external.

I also dislike the lids on rekords.

IMHO
Juwel are the best 'plug & go' tanks on the market (compaired to say tetra, interpet, Fish r fun etc)

however the best way to do a tank is a custom set up.
this means buying everything from the tank to the heater specifically
for your needs.

it isnt the best tank out there on the market, but its a good first tank, or even the second, or third or well you get the idea. i personally like the filter/heater box in the corner. its compacted and easy to hide with plants is nessary.the filters work well ive found. if your after a simple, easy, nice looking tank, juwels the one for you.

ive got the rio 400L. for ease of use and vfm you cant go wrong. i particularly like the hood, you just take one flap off and slide the light unit from one side to the other. it opens up the tank with the minimum of fuss

Good first tank if you dont know what you need or what your doing. As i've found out more about fish keeping i think the hood is poor, the filter is ok. I would'nt keep big fish in it. I think for a community tank with small fish its great.

Next time i'll be starting a tank from scratch wilh bits i've seleted thou.

Agree with wolfie

If money isn't a problem then a custom is always the best way to go but for most of us the low cost of ready-to-go setups like juwell are very appealing.

Another good point mentioned was them being good for good small community fish
