Hi all, newbie with a question...
I am setting up a Juwel Rio 300 ready to start a fishless cycle but i'm not sure if the 300watt heater is working properly.
It has been on, fully turned up for 3 days and the tank temp is only 25c and won't go any higher, the room the tank is in isn't that warm (10c) but not sure if this is a factor.
Is this normal performance or should the heater be keeping the water warmer?
Thanks in advance.

the coldness of the room with have an effect but 25 is fine for the tank, mine is at 24

Is it one of the new juwel heaters with out the marking on top ?? thay have a neon light to show you that its on

I take it you using the internal filter turn the heater off and hang it on the outside of the filter then you can see if its working

tbh check what the heater set to it may take another few days to come up to temp. 24-27 is ideal for tropical depending what you want to keep tbh

It is the new type with the neon light, it is on all the time. I was just wondering if the heater should be able keep the tank warmer than it is at the moment or is this normal performance. I don't think it will be possible to get the tank to 27c (not that i want to at the moment but just incase)

Well i was under the assuption that these heaters were only good for heating 10c above room temp, which would mean that yours would be struggling to keep it up to temp you want, can you increase the room temp another 5c to see if that makes a difference?

Interested to know if this would have a impact.

Cheers, Karl

yeah what you have to remember is that you've got 1 heater in the tank furiously trying to warm all the water up, then all around the outside of the tank you've cold air cooling it back down again. with the room temp this cool i'm not surprised that the heater is on all the time.

while 25oC is fine for the vast majority of trops it's not gonna do the equipment any good to be maxed out all the time, I don't think there's anything wrong with the heater just that your asking too much of it.

Tanks shouldn't generally be in rooms which are excessivley hot or cold, if the heater was to fail in a tank that's in a room heated by central heating so maintains a normal steady temperature then it'd hold it's temp for a bit and the fish would probably be fine. If your heater was to go in the room that it's in now the temp would drop rapidly and most of the fish would probably be dead within a day or so at those temps.

I'd suggest you get another 300 watt heater and run them in tandem which should ease the load on the heater and it builds some redundancy into the system in case of equipment failure.

As an aside, do you walk around in your woollies all day? I like to have my fish in a room where I spend a lot of time (living room), so that I can see and appreciate them, but I certainly wouldn't want that room at only 10 degrees - lol
Just interested to hear what / where this room is?

Also I don't know what you have in the way of a tank lid / condensation cover etc, but bear in mind that if the room is only at 10 degrees, and the water is at 27 ish you will likely get a lot of evaporation.
Also if you have surface disturbance, (filter feed, air pump etc), then that will also cause additional evaporation, and cooling of the water.

i'm imagining conservatory...... if thats the case you'll also need to be careful of overheating in the summer. when the water gets hot it holds less oxygen, if the tank overheats in the summer fish will literally suffocate cos they can't get enough oxygen.

another one of the reasons why we don't advise tanks to be kept in conditions where there is a lot of fluctuation of extreme temperatures.
