This is my first post here and just looking for advise on changing the Juwel filters. I own a Rekord 120 and up to now I’ve been keeping to the schedule printed in the manual, so the filters have been changed in a cycle as laid down. I've heard this is unnecessary, I have now been told the filer media should just be washed out with old tank water to remove any blockage and used again. Up to now I’ve not had any problems with my water quality so far, but I do understand the bacteria are an important part of the water. Any input would be great.

hi wantski and welcome to the forum.

i personally have a Juwel Rekord 60 and Rio 180. both tanks have been up and running for over 18 months and i've never replaced the blue sponges, only the white filter floss on top.

generally i give one sponge a squeeze in tank water once a month, never both at once. more importantly are you cleaning the pump. it comes apart quite easily when you work it out and a quick scrub with an old toothbrush will do wonders for the water flow.

hope that helps.

oh another tip. rather than buying the official Juwel white filter floss refils buy a big bag of pond filter floss (looks exactly the same just a big 2 foot sack of it) one bag costs about £5 and will last about 10 years, just cut a lump to size when you need to replace the top sponge in your filter (generally every week or two)

My maintenance is very similar to jimboos. Apart from the fact that I always squeezed all my sponges out in some siphoned tank water. My nitrite and ammonia levels have never fluctuated as a result and to my knowledge I only ever got rid of fish water (poo).

I also weekly washed the power head and gave it a scrub with a toothbrush. Well worth to keep it from clogging up. Make sure you take all the bits apart.
Also vacuum the bottom of the black filter box as that can accumulate quite a bit of waste too

However all that said, after 3 years I've decided to get rid of my Jewel compact H and it only has another week left running alongside my external pump (to migrate the bacteria) before I remove the eyesore. :)
