Does anyone know if Juwel aquariums are made of tempered glass? I want to drill my Rio180 for an overflow but not going to bother if tempered as I am not interested in a pile of glass!!

Not usually. If they are toughened glass, they have to have, by law, a BSI kitemark stamped onto each piece.

Thanks for the reply. I contacted Juwel directly and asked if they did use tempered glass. The response was they use FLOATGLASS NOT TEMPERED, which is apparently a high capacity, scratch resistance glass. It is theoretically possible to drill holes for an overflow but not surprisingly they wouldn't garantee it would work !!! I think I may have to give it a go . What do people think 3/4" or 1" for the bulkheads?? I have a 1700 l/hr NEW-JET which will give just under 10x flow through the sump/refugium.

IMO the bigger the better. You wont have any problems if the overflow can handle more water volume than your pump but if its the other way around your going to be in trouble

Dont forget to take head loss into account as well. Depending on how far it is from your sump to the return in your display the pump will lose power. have PM'ed you a link to a headloss and overflow calculator.
