Looks as though i will be getting the Juwel 180 tank i spoke about..

I would like advice from anyone, should i run a fishless cycle in it? How many days? Or should i add fish after a couple of days, some hardy ones?

I want to get it right this time, as my previous tank that i have, has almost finished cycling, after 8 weeks, which has took some time, due to bad advice given from the lfs, you guys have really helped me though thanx...

Do you think i should put sand in the Juwel 180?

I currently have gravel in my exisiting tank, and have had no problems with it, but a few of my fish i am hoping to transfer into the juwel 180, so i want it all to be nice for them....

Can i just say the tank im getting is second hand, 1 year old, comes with all filter/heater etc.. dont know about sand/gravel, dont think she has any fish in it anymore... so i will be starting from scratch with it....

Thanx Claire x

Congrats ! Hope you get it.
If you do, absolutely do the fishless cycle ! From what you've been through (deaths and all) doing your cycle with fish, you'll find this method much better.
I know it's a pain to look at an empty tank for a number of weeks, but it's best :)
I would estimate that you are looking at anything from 4 to 8 weeks. If you need ammonia, let me know and I can send you some.

Play around with aquascaping etc. until is all cycled and ready to go.

Have you seen the article on fishless cycling ?
I like this version by Undawada.

Hi

Thanx this is what i was thinking, doing a fishless cycle, can i buy ammonia? How much do i need to add, do i put this in daily?

How will i know if the filter is ok that she is selling me?? (daft question perhaps)

I will need all new sponges yes?

Its for sale on e-bay, for £150 she hasnt had any bids, and ive been watching it all week, so i have arranged to go and look at it tonight, before i make my mind up, i want to make sure, its in good condition etc...

Thanx for your help :D I will let you know how i get on !!

So glad it looks like you will get this tank  , been reading the posts that you have placed here and have really felt for you, im a newbie myself (only had a tank a couple of months) and i seem to have been very lucky, and it was luck certainly not judgement.

Cant wait to hear what you do with it, and maybe see some pics.

Actually - if you haven't already read it, have a look at this pinned article too. That will give you some more tips on the fishless cycle.

And check out this article that will explain the Nitrogen cycle to you :)

I would advise buying new sponges. You never know what's lurking in the old ones.

Oh and ammonia you can usually pick up at Robert Dyas for around £2 a bottle. Make sure it's pure ammonia and not perfumed etc. added. The best is probably Jeyes.

Excellent links thanx....

Thanx Claire aswell...

Fingers crossed i will do it this time, and i wont get tempted to add any fish into an empty tank, as i already have 1 tank set up with my lovely fish in there, so i can look at them, and think of the great possibilites once everything is cycled...;)

Hi,Clairel.I have just done a fishless cycle, and it is well worth it.Iused very fine Gravel, and bought a collection of Plants from Greenline to start me off.I put 2 Teaspoons of Ammonia in the tank(Try not to breath). You can get Ammonia from Hardware Shops by the way. Then I added 1 Teas apoon a day to keep the Reading up to 5 ppm.It took 15 days to fully cycle.
I did get fed up at about 12 days, but gave myself a good talking to,then every thing happened at once
Th best thing about a fishless cycle,is that you can add more fish when it is finished :)
Oh and I had the temp at 80 Degrees.Hope this helps you Clairel.

Hi Claire

Ive got a little 54L Rekord 60, with 6 small Platys and 3 Skunk Corys, believe me i got the bad advice as well, ''its ok to put 7 small Platys in a tank thats only a couple of weeks old" and all that sort of thing, but i guess its my own fault for not doing my homework first. Luckly i have only lost 1 fish, had to take one back to the LFS as he was so aggressive, and one ended up in my boyfriends tank as he was being picked on, but only one has died on me, but that was enough. Now got a 6 UK gallon tank as well as a hospital tank :D is this the start of MTS

Worth mentioning how many US gallons you are speaking of. The length of a cycle depends on a few factors.

Yours would actually be 47.5 US gallons - I too have a Juwel Vision 180.

Are you getting the Vision (curved front) or the Normal one ? (that's to say if you win the bid which I'm sure you will at £150).

On the picture she has given me, its the curved front....My brother also has the same tank, hes had his about 8 months, and paid around £380 for it :p So hes a bit jealous....if i win that is lol....fingers crossed :hyper:

just make sure you are SURE what you would be bidding on. The eBay ad did NOT say it's a Vision. That picture is only a stock picture - unless she has sent you one that she took herself ?
